SuaSponte: I didn’t mean to imply that there was any correlation between the overt stance of the politicians and the activities of the forces on the ground, although I’m neither suggesting that the politicians were in the dark as to the actions of the troops (who follow orders).

casdave: ordinarily I’d agree that this is how these things start, but here the situation is different. I live in Longsight, a very deprived and predominantly Asian part of south Manchester and we have very few problems at all. Oldham is different, trust me (I have friends there), and I don’t think it’s just some kneejerk reaction, there’s some pretty deep seated racism there. I’m still trying to work out the reasons myself:(
