The kid from Accepted who constantly makes faux pas.
Steve Carell walking down the sidewalk in DC with a pack of animals behind him (i would love to see that IRL, it would be so surreal)

You stole the words right out of my head, **Ms. Pumpkin**.
One of the dumbest moments in _Because I Said So_ is when some guy tells Graham how he met some woman who was looking for dates for her daughter online, but when he says she used the phrase “Because I Said So” Graham instantly knows the woman in question is her mom. Apparently because, in spite of it being a well-known cliche, her mom is the _only person on Earth_ who actually says it.
Ah well, maybe these movie roles will lead to something better.

As far as why _The Passion of the Christ_ was controversial:
Some people felt it portrayed the Jews (i.e., the non-Christian Jews) in an overly negative light. Kind of propagating the whole “Jews killed Jesus” idea. Even though I saw the film, I can’t remember whether I personally felt that was true – but the idea definitely got some attention in the media.
However, I also know some people who found it objectionable for disproportionately focusing on Jesus’s suffering, rather than his message. If I remember, there was a bit of the Sermon on the Mount in there, but certainly the graphic scenes of Jesus being flogged and nailed to the cross seemed to be the centerpiece of the movie. Of course lots of people were brutally tortured and killed by the Romans, and that’s not what made Jesus’s life significant. Plus it made the message of the film feel like “Look how much Jesus suffered for you, you ungreatful bastards!”
All of which still didn’t bother me as much as Mel Gibson making up a definition for the word Apocalypse in the ads for his next movie (which I didn’t bother to see). It doesn’t mean “a new beginning”, you moron, it means “uncovering” or “revelation” – that’s why the Book of Revelation is called the “Apocalypse of John”! I’m not even a Christian and I know that.
Edit: I’m assuming I can call Mel Gibson a moron outside the Pit, since he’s presumably not a poster here. And to be clear, it’s not that he doesn’t know what some Greek root word means that bugs me, it’s that he used it (or a variant of it) to _title his movie_ apparently without bothering to look it up.

If I hadn’t gonein with such low expectations I probably would have hated the movie. Instead I was mildly amused, as long as I didn’twuestion anyof the logic orlack thereof. It actually is a pretty crappy movie, yet I didn’t hate it. It’s all about expectations, I suppose. My wife really enjoyed it, but she is a sucker for anything with animals in abundance.

So if I reviewed a film by saying that I’m leary of atheists with power because they end up massacring millions of people, you would take that as some sort of comment on a scene from it? Forgive my incredulity, but I don’t think so.

I have to agree that this was one of the stupidest movies I’ve ever seen in quite a long time. It was the most movie formula, least entertaining, dumbest premises, etc and I wish I could have had my time and money back.

Silver lining is that the big-shot movie career that might have lured Carell away from ‘The Office’ has been presumably derailed for a while, although folks seem to be giving him credit for trying.
Edit: Oh yeah, I’m glad I was out for the Office marathon (three whole episodes!!) on Thursday night, since recording it meant I was able to zap through those innumerable ads with a somewhat embarrased-looking Carell gamely touting the movie. Even in FF the scenes they showed looked terrible.

I disagree with you only slightly. Real movie stars need occasional stinkers to boost their street cred. If he goes on Leno and Letterman, eats shit and stays on the team, he’s a studio man. Looks like he’s doing it. Somehow.
