Since it was a sequel to _Bruce Almighty_, though and since it Morgan Freeman was being prominently billed as God, I think it was pretty clear that the trailers were not trying to imply any ambiguity as to whether Evan was really talking to God.

Yeah, but God could just be saying “I want you to build an ark” like “I want you to go sacrifice your son Isaac”, asking for obedience, not because a flood was really coming. Again, too much analysis.

Even the title doesn’t make any sense; in _Bruce Almighty_, the titular character got to actually be God for a while – at least for the greater Buffalo area. In this movie, Evan attracts animals and builds an ark. So the title is obviously just a lame tie-in to the previous movie.
I understand Wanda Sykes plays a wise-cracking black lady. Could this be the breakthrough role she’s been waiting for?

I still cannot comprehend the notion that this stupid little movie is in the ranks of most expensive film ever.
_This movie!?!_
When I first saw the ads I figured it was originally gonna be a straight-to-video Jim Carrey-less sequel that some how some one figured deserved a real release. Then, just last week I read that, with advertising, this film’s bill could top $250 million.
Holy flurking schnit! When a nothing film can get a budget like that then what can possibly pass for a true event movie these days?!
James Cameron, where are you?! Your last 3 films were all the most expensive ever made when released (T2 - $100M, True Lies - $150M, Titanic - $200M and even the one before that, the phenomenally under-rated The Abyss came close at $56M in '89). If anyone can make a film worthy of breaking the 300 million dollar budget mark its him!

Well, reread the thread and consider ‘Thirteenth Warrior’. It had one mid-grade star (Banderas), maybe fifteen other speaking parts, and after that all you had was a bleak viking village and some guys in neandertal costumes.
And that one was $150M.
Studios need to know when to cut their losses and dump a dog instead of hoping more cash will come up with something tolerable.

Evan Almighty was [Number one at the box office this weekend](http://elections-o.channel.aol.com/entertainment/articles/_a/evan-almighty-sails-to-top-of-box-office/20070624125809990001?ecid=RSS0001). But it was a pretty lackluster number one. It’ll probably break even on DVDs and the foreign market.

True. But at least 13th Warrior was based on a Michael Crichton novel and could have had, especially in pre-production, a sort of epic-y sense to it (wasn’t Ah-nold originally attached to it as well?)
Evan Almighty just so reeks of a _direct-to-video, B-unit, Comedy Central produced, couldn’t-get-the-original-guy-back-so-lets-make-it-on-the-cheap_ movie!
