I’ve been fired several times. Oddly enough, each time I ended up with a better job.
The first time, it was a sales job and I wasn’t making any sales (I’m OK as a retail sales, but not with ad sales).
The next two I was working for a nonprofit and the funding for my position ended.
I did software documentation for a startup and was fired because they didn’t like my work. That pissed me off because the example they gave me was a quick and dirty unedited first draft that I did as a favor to my boss (who was gone by then).
The next time, it was a small graphics firm that was starting to lose money. I was their computer expert, but they needed to cut back.
Finally, I was doing desktop publishing, but my boss left (to marry the company president) and the new boss didn’t like me. I was moved to another division and they finally laid me off (with decent severance, though).
In all cases, I’d be called into the boss’s office on a Friday afternoon to get the news. I became gun-shy of that sort of meeting.
