I had a gf’s parents do that once; it was kinda weird. It wasn’t why we didn’t get back together, though.

I’ve seen a few couples who cannot stand being married yet still manage to be close friends.

I do think it’s more common than you might think. I broke up with my husband when we were dating, then got back together and got married.

Off the top of my head I can think of two presidents- Mr. Lincoln got into a fight with Mary Todd in the early 1840s when they were courting, then got back together and married. Also Teddy Roosevelt- he dated a women named Edith in high school or maybe college, then broke up and married Alice. Alice died a few days after childbirth, and eventually TR courted Edith again and married her. The daughter of that first marriage, also named Alice, didn’t get along with Edith so well.

You didn’t realize that you were married for 12 years? :dubious:

My wife dumped me when we were dating because I was a futureless deadbeat, it inspired me to get my shit together and after a few months I was confident enough to ask her out again.

We’ve been married 13 years now.

I’m one of them. My ex-wife is my best pal. She lives a couple of miles away. She has “partial custody” of our dog. We’re on each other’s medical directives. No way we’re ever going to be married again.

The parents of a friend of mine got divorced when she was in college. Eight years later they got married again.

When I was younger (like college aged) I seemed to know a lot of people who went through horrible breakups of long-term relationships (through high school) and then quickly married the next person they dated. It was weird.

My best friends were high school sweethearts and they broke up for a couple weeks in college, before they got married. The dude got a little bit of the cold feet, since he had never dated anyone else since he was 15, and thought maybe he was missing out. He realized he wasn’t, and they’ve been married for like 15 years.

Did you grandma get married when she was 10?

A friend of mine did that. Dated the same guy since she was 14 but broke up at 20 to “see what was out there.” Married him a few months later, just had their 30th anniversary. That’d be a good thread, seeing if anyone ever decided they were actually missing out. I know one friend did the same thing and decided she wasn’t missing anything but her longtime bf had married someone on the rebound within months. She counts it as a big tragedy but she really just wanted him back because she got dumped (a pattern she repeated for the next 20 years).

I had been dating a girl for a few weeks until she angrily stormed out on me. I assumed I would never see her again, but the following week she changed her mind about storming out and she asked me to get back together. We’ve been married for over 8.5 years now.

Together: 1999-2007
Apart: 2007-2009.
Together: 2009-current.
Basically I had a mental breakdown and left him and the state. He remained my best friend and helped me get my demons under control (him and antidepressants). As soon as I was ready, he took me back. He’s a keeper. Not sure I am but he seems to think so and that’s all that matters.

I broke things off with my now-husband 4 times. This was because I had issues with his age and income level. (both way too high for my comfort levels) I’m happily married now and am not a trophy wife.

I met my wife when she visited her friend when I was in college. We had a one-year long distance relationship, then broke up. About a year later when I was in grad school I visited her, it clicked, but then we got our wires crossed about the future and broke up again. About 2 1/2 years later I visited her in grad school, though we got along we didn’t really get together. A year after that we started talking again, I invited her to help me move, and we got engaged.
This was probably a good thing since we were too immature to be serious when we first met, and we figured out we couldn’t really stay away from each other.

My uncle (a notorious cheapskate and all-around not nice guy,) dated my aunt for 16 years, fabricating reasons to break up with her before her birthday, Valentine’s Day and Christmas… you know, those gift giving occasions… the ones that might cost him money… anyway, he finally married her, and they’ve been together a little less than 50 years. Amazing, and kind of sad.
