# Ever Driven or Ridden in a Six-Digit Car?

I asked this question over [two years ago](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=75867&highlight=Driven), but it didn’t get the volume I has hoping for because the title was too specific.
So, I ask again: I know there aren’t many fantastically wealthy dopers, but surely some of you have snuck in a test drive or _something_. Was it worth it?
As for me: I’ve been in a Lincoln Towncar limo a couple of times (prom & whatnot), but that’s about it.

Greyhound busses probably aren’t cheap…
At my old job the owner gave some emplyees rides in his \> $500,000 yacht/houseboat…

I’ve owned several 6 figure, or close to 6 figure, cars;
A Ferrari 355 Spyder - Sparse inside, exceptional handling and lets face it; it’s a Ferrari so it’s way cool 🆒
A Dodge Viper - Awesome, awesome, awesome. As unrefined as a car can get but what an engine
Lotus Esprit S4 - Great to look at and apparently very quick. I, and most other owner from what I understand, never found out as it was always in the shop being fixed. I consider this car the biggest heap of junk ever made yet I so want to love it.
6 Figure cars I’ve driven
Aston Martin Vanquish - Possibly the most beautifully refined sports car ever made
Now I’m older and slightly less of a moron I consider these cars a very quick way to spend thousands of dollars to lose your license.

Just [this one](http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/avenger_01.jpg). Handling was rough, creature comforts sparse, sound system scratchy, but it could clear a hole through traffic.

Only ours has 12 wheels, not 8.
Although I’m kinda hazy on the Versatile -v- Freightliner value specifics.

As a parking valet. So I don’t know if it counts, but FWIW they never seemed worth the money. I’d much rather have a Unimog, a classic Mini, a Ducati or Aprilia, an R32, a PBY…that is to say, many super-fun vehicles for the price of one teenage-boy-hard-on-machine.

Having lived in Germany where Mercedes are as normal as a Chevy in the US, I can say I have been spoiled.
But as far as cars costing $100,000 or more, seldom.
I once knew a guy in LA who had six Rolls and a few other pricey cars. The only thing he told me was that having a car that cost that much was a pain in the ass for repairs…and he told me they were often in the shop for repairs.
I also met a guy who had a new Jag with problems and the repairs were going to take six weeks. He asked about a loaner during that time and the owner of the dealership sniffed and said, “Most of our clients can afford a second car.”

I have driven my father’s 1936 Packard. It is a dual cowled, Deitrich bodied, V-12 powered and a super smooth driver. There were only 6 Deitrich bodied Packards built in 1936, only 4 are known to exist. One sold at auction a few years ago for over $250,000.

I drove some sort of Ferrari convertable from the airport ramp where I work to the parking lot and it was pretty cool…hard to get out of, but cool. I do remember the knobs and switches and stuff seemed awfully cheap looking. But what do I know…

I rode in the bucket of a bridge crane for a week, while doing bridge inspection. I can’t remember who makes it, but it’s this huge truck with a crane with 4 booms on it. You park the truck on a bridge, get in the bucket, and maneuver the booms so you’re underneath the bridge. I’m told the vehicle costs about $500,000.
I was in a Jaguar once, too, and in a Model A, though I have no idea how much either are worth.

I got to ride in a 1962 Berlinetta Ferrari. It was in 1962, so it wasn’t a six figure car then. But it is now, wherever it is. I suppose the Jaguar XKE I got to ride in is now a six figure care too, but it wasn’t then, either (65). A Shelby Cobra, was very close to six figures even then, but I only got to sit in that one.
High School buddy’s dad had a dealership.

Touching is certainly permissable, as is buying me alcohol and presents 😃
It is a really gorgeous car, but then again for about $250,000 it damn well ought to be. Seven or eight years ago I might have been tempted to put my name on the list for one, but now I can think of better things to do with that kind of money. After, it is still only a big chunk of metal which gets you from A to B.

Jaguar E Types are six-figure cars now, right? I touched one once.
Oh, and the SL55 AMG I sat in at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show.
