I _think_ I knew one, especially when he made a remark in passing about “soup to nuts”, just about the same time there was [an SDSAB article](http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/msoupnut.html) on the issue. [/QUOTE] I think thats a good idea ,we could all walk round with one trouser leg rolled up above the knee and have a secret handshake ,then if we saw someone else like it we go up to them and say"are you secretly a doper ?" Or has that been done before ? ---

[/QUOTE] Well, we had our magic decoder rings, but we kept losing them–seems there were Cuban spies, ex-KGB agents, and a handful of French Resistance holdouts that were stealing them thinking they were useful for “the war effort”. I met one once, and let him slink away. I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was just two cardboard disks held together with one of those gold pushpins you used to get in Kindergarten. That, and our handshakes surprisingly mimicked that of the Fraternal Order of Moose(s)/Meese/Mooseii. You couldn’t tell if your new acquaintance was a Doper, an “Antler of the Third Order”, a longtime lurker, or a “Hoof”. Tripler So yeah, we tried. . . ---

As mentioned,\*\* Asimovian\*\* and I eat at the same Hat. I’ve probably seen **Spectre** and **scotandrsn** around the CSUF campus at some time, especially if they’ve been there during the annual high school speech tournament. I live in the same small town as **Furuiza** and **RoadRunner** , so I’ve probably seen them, too. **DiosoBellisima** and I both coach debate, so the odds are we’ve run into each other at State or some other tournament. ---

I live in a Dope-poor area. I think there are a couple of Dopers within…oh…say 20 or 30 minutes of me and I’m sure there are a couple Dopers in the city I work. ---

A co-worker seemed to be a real Doper-type and I began to suspect that he might be a poster, so I waited for an opportune moment to test him. As luck would have it, he eventually mentioned something about a laser death ray, at which point I jumped in with “Ah, 1920’s style.” But there wasn’t the slightest blink of recognition from the guy. It was worth a shot. ---

I once opened a thread posted by **Oy!** asking for a bit of Portuguese translation help: [Can anyone translate English into Portugese?](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=352390) She was asking for help translating a short note to accompany a gift for her housekeeper. When I saw the woman’s name (“Nair”, pronounced nyEER), and location (Trenton), I figured that the odds were pretty slim of having two Brazilian women with that name cleaning houses in Trenton – she is good family friend! I asked Nair about her friend ( **Oy!** ) and she had nothing but kind words to say about her. One of these days we still need to all get together for a Brazilian _churrasco_ (bar-b-cue). That was cool. ---
