My three boys’ names all start with ‘K’. Don’t know what I was thinking. Also, when one of them was doing something really bad, I’d be all "kr. . .ky. . .kl. . …YOU, C-mere! The wife’s niece named all her kids starting with K also. Not sure why. What I really hate is people who use outrageously non-standard spellings of their kids’ names, like Margoryte or Mckynzyee or some such, dooming the kid to a lifetime of having to spell their name over and over again. ---

My father had a first cousin whose name began with ‘M’. She married a man whose first name also began with that letter. So, of course, all four of her children were given names that began with ‘M’. Fortunately, there are enough common first names beginning with that letter that none of the four kids had strange or made-up names. ---

I had a friend named Tiger and he had a sister named Beaver, no kidding. And she married a guy called Catfish to boot, although I don’t think that was his given name. ---

I knew a girl who had a numeral in her name. I’m not going to out her here, but imagine going through life with a name like Al5ison, pronounced al-five-ison. Her brother had a more normal name. ---

I knew someone who had four or five daughters. His name started with a J, and so did all his daughters. I have a relative who has four boys. Each one has a first name that starts with a W, and none of those four names are common first names like “William.” ---

When my brother (initials BRT) married his wife and she took his last name, her initials became BRT as well. Their two children now have the same initials. They also named their dog with the same way. (Initials made up) I went to school with a woman with the numeral ‘9’ as her middle name. She went by ‘9’, I didn’t know her first name until she graduated. She has a brother who has ‘7’ as a middle name. The names are completely unrelated to birth order or anything else. They have a younger brother with a relatively normal name, except he was named after someone; think Thomas Jefferson Lastname. ---

My Auntie named her twin daughters Michelle and Nicole, hoping Mickey and Nicky would stick. They did not, and both women have gone by Michelle and Nicole their whole lives. ---

I used to joke “You want to know why I’m messed up? I have 2 cousins - brothers - named John and Wayne and nobody in my family thinks it’s weird!” (Actually, Wayne came first, and was named for his dad. John is his younger brother; it had nothing to do with the actor) Also, my first girlfriend’s name began with a J. Her sisters’ names were K and L. (That was intentional by their mom) I have a boss who goes by his middle name. I once asked him why. He said it’s because there are 5 people in his family with the same first name. ---

My first college roommate had four siblings. Dad’s name started with “A”, and Mom’s name started with “G”. Kids were “B” through “F” in order, although at least two of the kids went by either a middle name or a variant of their first name that did not start with the first initial. ---

My paternal grandparents both had names starting with J. They gave all eight of their kids names starting with J as well. ---

Some old friends of mine were expecting a boy. They picked out the name Michael, decorated the nursery in typical boy stuff, bought boy clothes, etc. Then the baby was born and what the ultrasound tech thought was a weenie turned out to have been just a play of shadow. They actually had a girl. Michaela is going on 23 now. ---

I think the closest I can get to a theme by a family I personally know is my co-worker’s children. Two sons named Julian and Adrian. One daughter named Julianna. I’m guessing if there would be another daughter, her name would be Adriana. Not likely, as my co-worker is most likely in the throes of peri-menopause at least. I’m presuming here about that, but it is inevitable. My favorite theme names by a family I don’t personally know are the folks who named their kids Clark, Addison, Waveland, and Sheffield. They named an extra daughter Ivy. It doesn’t get more Chicago than that. ---
