We have been to Disney World twice and both times used a travel agent that specializes in the Disney hotels. As soon as she was alerted to special offers, she made sure we got them, which is how we got a reduced rate room the first time and a package with a free meal plan the second.
Back in the late '80s, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and airlines were not yet on the Internet, I used a travel agent to help me find the cheapest flight.
Other than that, no. I kind of like booking things myself - I’m a bit of a control freak that way - and I don’t think a travel agent can save me money in most circumstances.
I am an aspiring travel agent so I use one every time I go somewhere; does that count?
From what I can see it’s a stagnant career choice. A bunch of agents and agencies got out as the big travel sites became more popular. There was a bump back up as home based agents were granted more legitimate standing in the industry. Another bump is happening now as there’s a slight turn away from the online travel agencies but I suspect that’s going to be reversed again as mobile technology improves. Travel apps worry me a bit. On the other hand, it sounds like some on the supplier side (hotel, cruise lines) are worried about too much clout by the wholesalers so that’s been interesting to watch.
Agent specialty is important. If you are still inclined to use a travel agent ask them what type of travel they focus on (leisure, business, cruise, air, all-inclusives, etc.), destination, etc. For some of the posts I’ve read here you would have wanted to ask/tell the agent you wanted a FIT (Fully/Free/Foreign Independent Travel) not a tour.
People who use travel agents will tell you to seek out a knowledgeable, experienced agent. The problem some run into is that so many agents left the business that finding those really good agents still around can be difficult. Someone like me who’s new and trying to gain that experience may not meet the expectations set by those who are seeking it.
BMalion and Ducati; it sounds like you are no longer in the travel industry. Can I PM you to ask what made you get out?
