Everest: Just Don't Do It

Wicked thin ayah.

Shit I’m gonna have to check that out when I’m next back there!

Or you could buy this shirt: Mount Everest Summit Club I Climbed Mount Everest T-Shirt - Seseable
So many people have done it, no one would know the difference.

The uniqueness of summiting Everest continues to elicit awe.

It’s hardly unique if 274 people do it in a day

And friends they may think it’s a movement.

How many people do you know who have done it?

274 people to the summit??!! That sounds like a lot, and major crowds up high on the mountain! If most (all?) came from the South Col route instead of from the north, that makes for a major traffic jam going that way.

They must’ve had an efficient method of getting people through the Hillary Step, in both directions.

274, wow.

My comment was about crowding the trail to the summit from Camp IV, not about the uniqueness of summiting Everest — which is definitely a unique achievement.

"Unique’ is doing some heavy lifting there.

How about “uncommon”?

Now, climbing Mt. Agamenticus without Sherpa porters or supplemental oxygen as I did - that’s unique.

Climbing Mt A with Sherpa porters and supplemental oxygen – that would be unique.

Nice. I did Half Dome. That’s my best hike / climb. And I’ve got a really bad fear of heights so those cables were a challenge for me.

I love these Everest Mt climbing threads!

I did most of my Sierra hikes on the John Muir section, always like to rock scramble to close peaks or notches so see over the other side. Just amazing scenery, a few hours drive (4 1/2) from my home at the coast.

The Half Dome cable walk just gives me the heeby jeebys(technical term)…hanging on to rocks is one thing, slender cables in the hot sun, sweating?
I’m not really “afraid” of heights, but suspect I have some form of vertigo. I couldn’t walk near the edge of Mt Langley when I climbed it, made me woozy and sick feeling… (somewhat easy climb/scramble up) I had to slide on my stomach to look over. Its close to a 1000ft drop on that one face. (I haven’t watched Meru yet, but thanks for the link above) Free Solo is also on my list.

To be fair, it was a compelling read. He wrote well of the disaster (I know certain other climbers have minor quibles).

It did not encourage me into sensationalizing Everest.

My native Cape Town (Table Mountain) has (apparently, and local legend) a higher raw annual death rate, although that is balanced by the fact that Everest is very access limited, whereas any idiot with an Instagram account and inappropriate equipment can hike routes on Table Mountain, that they are very much unguided by logic, and unguided by actual guides.

And that mountain is only 1085m above sea level. Everest is (ahem) a whole different level.

And that’s what it is, the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, and all you got to do to join is climb Mount Everest the next time a sudden storm or even a stiff breeze comes around.

“Here, hold my beer, watch this…” — used to be limited to only those nearby and actually there. Now with social media, resultant stupidities can go viral and pretty soon everybody knows how stupid you are. Or were.

I haven’t watched Meru either, and yes thank you for the link above, but I have seen Free Solo and you are certain to like it.

Meanwhile, back on Everest…

Got a “video unavailable” message.

Sorry, it works for me so maybe it’s how my account is set up. It should be easily findable in YouTube.

It’s also available on Netflix, Prime Video, Hoopla, and Kanopy.
