I second (third, fourth?) both working in retail and food service. Gives you a new appreciation for the folks offering to supersize you. Travel to at least one foreign country. And if you’re from New England (and possible most of the northern states), a quick jaunt up to Canada doesn’t count. Have the glorious experience of a very young puppy bounding up to you like you are truly the best thing _ever_. ---

live in a culture they consider to be very foreign to their own. I’m in China now for my second year and it really teaches you a lot about people by seeing how another group of people(in this case, 1.3 billion Chinese) live. ---

Haven’t worked retail, but my first job I ever had was working at Taco Bell, and it did give me a new (at the time) appreciation, so I fourth, or fifth that 🙂 Let’s see, what can I add? … serve on a jury (as I did in 2001 in Cleveland, and will be doing next week at the county courthouse down the street from where I now live). … visit one or more of the great museums (I’ve been to the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History, among others). … take a long trip by bus (several Greyhound jaunts between Norfolk and Cleveland during my college days) and one by rail (Montreal to Norfolk, in my case). ---
