Yeah, I’m against the mass claim, also. I just don’t see it helping us.

So, we’re coming into a game that’s even bigger than LOTR, and probably even more confusing. I’m already dreading the sheer volume of posts. But, whatever, I’ll live. I think I’m going to have to make a spreadsheet, though.

One other problem with the mass claim idea is that there has to be a good majority of participation for it to be worthwhile. Right now it seems like we’re 50/50 for/against which makes it a less appealing proposition. For the record, I’m against it. Although, like others, there could be some LOTR bias involved here too.

Well, this early in the game nothing as happened and we know basically nothing. To be honest, I think I played terribly on Day 1 of LOTR, and so I’m going back to my Day 1 plan from Harry Potter: Vote for the non-participating.

Everyone chimed in on Night 0, which is good. ToDay, I think we have yet to hear from Natlaw, Wanderers, Romanic, and Texcat. Along those lines:

**Vote Natlaw**

It has been a long, busy day for me. Put me definitely in the no-claim camp. What would you have the power roles do? They obviously can’t make a true claim. They would have to lie and I think all liars should be lynched. I hate to think of myself running around catching the power roles in their lies, and missing the scum.

NAF is worrying me at the moment. He was first to bring up the mass claim, which to me just seems like an easy way for the scum to start fishing. NAF has the book. He wants to hold on to the book. It may all be innocent, but it’s making me nervous.

peeker is also making me nervous with this endorsement of the mass claim with no reason, no explanation.

I tend to like mass claims despite all evidence to the contrary. but that’s because I like digging through the info looking for the hidden lies. Can’t remember off the top of my head if an early mass claim has ever in my experience been good for town. I do like locking scum down to what they can later claim though. Keeps em tied down when the info starts rolling in later and makes it easier to find inconsistencies.

I do think they have fake Role-PM. That’s my point. We would force them to pick _one_ fake PM and they would have to stick with it.
It’s the _stick with it part_ I like so much.

Let me make it more clear:

Scum #1 pick the fake Role-PM of “Celing Cat” and quote some innocent color along the lines of “your fur is nice and you eyes are pretty”. Scum #1 would not give anything away right then and there.
Then we come to Day 3 in the game and Scum #1 is in trouble and need to claim. And to do it fast. Now to hide? Only one place: In the fake Role-PM of “Celing Cat”.
Now my point was that maybe Scum #1 was been lynched for showing PIS. Then Scum #1 would like to claim a power of some sort of investigation. But was if “Celing Cat” was a fake protector-role?
Then Scum #1 would have a perfect nice little worthless Role-PM to claim that would not let the little Scum off the hook.

First of all I don’t think I’m pressing “very hard” to get info from people’s PMs. I might be pressing for us to discuss the idea of a color/sentence-claim - but I don’t think I’m trying to press anyone into given me special info from their PMs.

Most people have said they don’t like a _mass_ claim this early and I agree with that. I’m trying to bring forth a new idea about a different claim and want to make sure people:

a) Get the difference
b) Understand what the color-claim-idea really is about
c) End up agreeing with me 😉

Total: Even assuming that multiple cover roles have been provided, I just don’t think limiting them to one of however many they received is that much of a win.

Would you still feel it was a good idea if they were only provided one cover role each? Because I happen to think it is still risky even if they haven’t been provided with any.

I agree with this – a mild encouragement of Oy’s suspicion coupled with a maybe yes/maybe no disavowal: it’s not much, but it’s the biggest ping so far. So what the heck, votes are cheap.

Okay, I’ll let it go.
But yes - I still very much feel it’s a good idea.

We’re playing a game of hide-and-seek with scum and the more places they have to hide in, the more we have to seek.
My idea was to try and reduce the number of places for them to hide - and I still think the idea has some merit because in a Storyteller-game I’m very certain that every word in every PM (fake or not) has been thought through and put there for a reason.

Here is the post that started this particular line.

At the time the pm’s had just gone out saying “You are not yet scum”. I had not received, and I presume nor had anyone else, their role pm’s. How could they when their alignment was not yet certain?

I am presuming that everyone got a PM informing them of their prospective alignment - I view that as ALL PM’s sent out

The use of some here is what I was looking at when responding to Oy. As I said at the time, it could mean absolutely nothing, or it could be a scum tell. I stand by that post.

How could it be a scum tell? Well there is a subset of people in the game who could have received roles when the rest of us just got “You are not yet scum”, and that is the people who are definitely scum.

There are a lot of coulds and maybes in this thouygh, which is why I say it could also mean nothing.

I wanted to say, too, that I don’t really like Idle’s post that TL refers to here. As she points out, there’s a sort of casual mis-use of the word “most” in that many of those who have commented only discussed mass claims – not many have so far come out explicitly against the idea of Drain Bead’s that Total is promoting here.

For the record: I do see the “Ceiling Cat” benefit to this idea. It would pin the scum down to a specific fake claim to some extent. They could always re-write in a pinch if they happened to pick a bad one originally, but that would expose them to a not-insignificant risk of the resulting PM not being up to Storyteller’s usual style.

I am slightly concerned about the risk in giving away something we didn’t intend to in our own choices of color, and I still have that meta-game resistance to anything like this that I mentioned earlier, but the idea is intriguing in a way that most such things aren’t. I can’t say I’d argue too hard if it were to gain some support.

When a scum does not find an easy reason to place a vote, they’ll resort to that kind of stuff: voting inactive, or any universal reasons (3rd on the bandwagon, blah blah) to look good and appear part of the pack.

Now you are voting someone from a list of people who have not posted in… the last 9 hours or so. 9 Hours only. This fits very well the behavior of a Scum looking for reasons to vote.

**vote: Chipacabra**

You mentioned using the same plan in Harry Potter. Me being new, I don’t know where to look for this game, so could you please provide a link to this game? I want to see you voting for inactive players, and specially look at how long you waited before calling them “non-particpating” players.

I also want to point that I am not voting Chipacabra because my name is in the list. It does not make a difference, I might have placed the vote on him no matter what. 9 hours, sheesh.

Can someone provide a list of who is a new player in this group? I don’t mean new as in playing his 1st or 2nd mafia game, but rather who is playing his first game with this group of players.

I know that Mrs. McGinty and I are two of these new players.

I’m asking because the 4th Scum was chosen by the 3 randomly picked scums and there’s maybe something we can make from this. I think there’s a strong possibility that they would have chosen a player they know about, because who would want to take a chance with a newbie when you can pick a good player, someone you can rely on?
