:dubious:

Where we play together, a significantly lower number of scum per townie is typical. Often the mafia get more than one kill to compensate, or there are other things to make it balance, which usually it does.

Now there’s the lack of claim, though.

I can see why some people might be hesitant to vote for Romanic, because 4 scum for 30 folks sounds low to me too. But we haven’t had a full cycle play out yet; tomorrow, who knows how many people could be dead?

But before I hop on a bandwagon, let’s see what else he’s got posted. His first couple of posts here are fluff, so we can safely ignore those.

I still think this post is weird. I know he’s coming from a different board, so the culture there might be different, but to say he can’t even IMAGINE why editing would be suspicious? Weird.

> [@Romanic](#):
>
> I don’t see why you would want to restrict it, or even see someone as suspicious just because he has edited a post.

He even repeats that assertion here:

> [@Romanic](#):
>
> If this is true then it’s a no brainer that post editing should not be seen as suspicious. Editing a post within five minutes is pretty much like correcting it before posting it, and will mostly be used to fix errors rather than dramatically change its content.

This, for me, is just ever so slightly scummy. It really sounds like he wants to reserve the right to edit small mistakes, and he wants us all to accept that scum have reserved that right.

> [@Romanic](#):
>
> Yeah, I’ve seen similar mistakes. It’s sad really to win/lose the game on a mistake like this, when the fun part is trying to figure out who is mafia based on thread behavior and game actions. I have no problem with someone editing/removing his post if he makes a blunder like this.

He’s responding to Rysto in this particular post. So now, we’ve gone from not even imagining a situation in which someone scummy would want to edit, to having seen it multiple times before? I can accept that he finds it “sad” to win or lose a game on such an egregious mistake like that, but that’s what Mafia is all about. Scum make mistakes, and we have to ferret them out. **If** he were town, wouldn’t he want to limit editing for exactly that reason?

Then there’s a section where he and I are talking past each other about editing. It starts here if you’re interested: [http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=12982343#post12982343](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=12982343#post12982343) Nothing jumped out at me as scummy in that exchange; it’s a lot of him and me talking past each other.

He votes for Chipa for as reasonable a reason as anybody can have this early in the game, and I can’t find anything there that pings my scumdar. I don’t agree with his reasoning (I see where Chipa is coming from; it’s a prodding vote, not a lasting vote, right?), but it’s fair enough.

But then we come to the major slip. An exact number of scum. I’ll admit, it’s tempting to accept his explanation as presented. After all, that’s a MAJOR scum slip, and I’d except scum to be far more careful about that sort of thing. But, as was noted over and over again in the spoiled LOTR thread, town is generally far too willing to accept or come up with twisted, convoluted explanations for things when the simple, direct reason is the correct one. I can’t give you a pass for this, Romanic, especially not with the oddities in your earlier posting history.

**Vote Romanic.**

Well, his defense is that he was thinking of another game entirely, which would explain the incongruity. I still think he needs to swing, but the “it makes so little sense that he’d only say it if it were true!” point doesn’t actually count against him.

and another thought just occurred to me.

If Romanic is Scum, it might have been a thought they wanted out there so we’d think it was true when they got lynched.

However,

and this is a big However. I mean, see how big it is?

Why would he do it if he weren’t already on the block to be lynched?

Unless he wants to be lynched, as a Scum bomb or something. I dunno. We always seem to talk about Scum bombs but then we never seem to have them.

He’s also a good guy, and an excellent mafia player. I’d been thinking about trying to get him in a game over here for a while (along with Mrs McGinty and a couple others). I hope I can convince him to do so again, however this turns out.

How did this work in Evil Dead?

I have read the wiki for the film, and the very scare wiki for ED2, but how did this work as a game mechanic? NK’d people became zombies?

Well, I appear to have arrived a little late to the party this morning…I don’t have much to add that hasn’t already been said before (but I won’t let that stop me). A couple thoughts:

[ul]
[li]I agree that 4 Scum among 30 players seems like a ‘lower than normal’ number. On the other hand, when was the last time any of you played a ‘normal’ game of Mafia?[/li][li]I’m a bit bothered by Romanic’s refusal to make a role claim, but \*only \*a bit. I agree with the points made concerning the value of Claiming at this point, but consider this: It’s only Tuesday. We still have something like 4 days left before Dusk. That’s a long time for ‘something else’ to pop up that is more suspicious that Romanic’s slip-up. He might simply be biding his time to see if he really needs to Claim or not. If that’s the case, I think that suggests that he had something to hide, but that could equally likely mean he’s Scum \*or \*a Town Power.[/li][/ul]

As I said, there’s a long way to go before Dusk, but at this point I don’t think we can overlook this particular faux-pas.

**vote Romanic**

</div>

I just not sure what to make of the Romantic thing. On the one hand if I was going to assume number of scum I would guess 30^.5 or 5-6 scum so I could see saying 4 +1 but 4 total is way off. Unless there is either PIS or confusion with another game. I think the PIS is more probable.

I don’t like early Day bandwagons since there is a high likelihood of scum taking an easy opportunity to jump on the first town slip. I’m temped to look at the early bandwagon joiners as a group of people where scum are more likely to be present.

But damn the slip was so bad I can’t ignore it. I think it’s early so I’ll get my vote out there but I doubt it will stick, if for no other reason then to start working on my case for toMarrow since our votes are sticky.

> No, there’s a culture difference here. If you’re going down anyway, it is expected to role claim. Occasionally vanillas will refrain, but no one else (unless you’re Pleonast, who is not in this game). Reason being, if you have a good claim, we have the option to let you off the hook, temporarily or permanently, and to later draw conclusions based on that claim and the reactions to it. It’s a town-friendly thing to do, and not even necessarily a death sentence.
>
> If you are mafia, then claiming is even more important (for the rest of us, that is). You surely have only a limited supply of decent claims; you’d have to use one up. Honestly, if you don’t put up a claim pretty darn quick under the circumstances, I’m going to assume you’re mafia and just want to save them for your teammates.

Wait…So, you know that Romanic is likely not claiming because of a difference in mafia cultural understanding, but you are voting for him anyway?

Even though you also think that it is likely that he got confused as to what game he was talking about because the other place you play together usually doesn’t have many scum.

Even though you know that he probably won’t claim at the lynch block?

Um…how do I tell you that I think you are smarter than this without insulting you at the same time?

I am keeping my vote where it is for now because I don’t think that 4 scum is too few necessarily, but damn NP, that is some heavy selling up the river.

Also, Romanic, if you are town claiming now would be a good thing. Otherwise we are just going to stop looking for other scum and you are just going to be lynched anyway.

If you are not town feel free to not claim, because you are gonna get lynched for not claiming.
