You may notice that I never argue your points. That’s becasue they are good. They aren’t right, but they make sense. But don’t confuse your points making sense with other people’s points making sense. Your reasoning here and TexCats reasoning are very different.

If the book killed the first person that picked it up (and story strongly implied that it might) and there were 5 scum scum lose 1/5 of it’s team right then. Let’s put that in perspective. That would be the equivalent of 5 townies in this game if you assume there are no third parties and 5 scum.

> Also, the mason play in Ragnarok was actually a fairly conservative play because the mods essentially gave us a mason safe claim. It had a big risk, but the reward was that we win the game if it works. I don’t see the same risk/reward scenario here.

In any case, your assessment of the risk to reward ratio has focused solely on the risk to Scum in order to discount pro-Scum motivation.

It’s quite possible that the Scum could decide that the rewards would be worth the risk.

> There’s plenty of very good information in that list. Anyone here could analyze when someone voted, or how. Their wording, their timing, their reasoning. The interaction between voters, the counter-arguments, and the defenses. There’s almost certainly opportunistic scum hiding in that list. It’s totally fair to believe that the bandwagon has happened fast. But it does a disservice to the town as a whole to throw out general smudges on everyone who voted for Peeker, or to dismiss the case as “pretty thin” without a shred of corroborating evidence or a case against anybody in particular. Whether Peeker is town or scum, he _did_ waffle on who he misread. He _won’t_ reveal his role PM. He _did_ allude, whether mistakenly or not, to information he shouldn’t have. Those are facts, and there’s nothing “thin” about them.
>
> Too long, didn’t read version: I’d rather see specific cases built against players, rather than general smudges. Thanks for your time. 😃
>
> [off soapbox]

I made a “wow, what a fast bandwagon argument” so let me elaborate on my reasoning:

I believe that the early peeker bandwagon is the result of laziness. Not necessarily scumminess, though the scum are even lazier than town because they have no motivation to do research, but a general willingness to follow the flow. “Oh look, a shiny case. Me too!” It’s killed two townies so far this game. Personally, I think the case against peeker was crap up until he started to refuse to post his PM - THAT, at this stage of the day and vote spread, is a scum tell. Everything in his initial slip isn’t a scum tell and, if there’s an explanation for WHAT PEOPLE THINK ACTUALLY HAPPENED then i’ve missed it. Seriously: Did peeker plan to steal the book and somehow not realize he had? Did NAF reveal on the scum thread that he was planning to report the book missing and peeker didn’t catch when? The logic matters, both for this lynch and, if peeker is scum, for the next. I just think town needs to put a little more thought into this. a 13-X vote split should be the sign of an overwhelming case, not a weak case that picked up some steam because people didn’t stop to think about it.

Okay, to the game state:
Peeker’s refusal to post his PM is scummy. I’d vote for him, but his lynch is so overwhelming at this point that my vote isn’t needed. If my vote becomes needed, I’ll change.

Why I’m leaving my vote:
Idle’s change of heart is nonsenical. All of Idle’s explanations for his change of heart are vapor - there’s no there there. I’m not sure how town managed to miss this, but with very few exceptions it has. I’m beginning to wonder if Idle is a book-focused third party of some kind, it’s the only thing that makes sense to me. Or maybe Idle stole the book, that would account for his confidence that NAF no longer has it. I’d wonder if he had a power role but, given that the book was stolen at dawn, NAF would have come up as scum last night, even to the cop.

The key point to me is if a Scum NAF kept the book and said it in the Game Thread he’d be “safe” from being investigated. He’d then keep turning up as Scum and would be able to explain this with the fact that he had the book.
So to me it simply doesn’t make sense for a Scum NAF to pretend the book was stolen.

I can see that a Scum could have tried to grap the book and would want to hold on to it. But I just can’t figure out why a Scum would say he lost the book - unless he really did.

So either:

1. NAF is scum and the book was stolen by non-scum
2. NAF is scum and passed the book to another scum
3. NAF is town and the book was stolen by non-town
4. NAF is town and trying to hide the book from scum

And the “slip/mistake” Peeker made would only make sense as a Scum-slip if the 2 or 3 is the case.
So I can’t see why if Peeker flips Scum, NAF is Scum as well.

Could someone please explain it to me. Slowly. Because I just. Don’t. See. It.

</div>

**Very long and important post.**

After being on the cusp of claiming for awhile, I’ve finally decided to (reason at the end).
**I’m an Investigator**.

NAF is not a demon. I breadcrumbed it, [in this post](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=13013209&postcount=1167), made shortly after this Day started.
In it, there are four sentences. If you read only the first words of all four sentences, it reads “NAF Is Not Scum”.

He MAY still be a malicious third party, but he is definitely NOT a Demon/Deadite. I know this for 100 percent fact.
My role PM, which I’m about to post, shows how I know it with surity:
Welcome to the game; you are the **Inexperienced Religious Figure**

ALIGNMENT: Town
GENERIC: Investigator
WIN CONDITION: All Scum and malicious third-parties (if any) have been vanquished.

BACKGROUND:

You have come here fresh out of religious training, young and idealistic and bursting with faith in a denominationally-nonspecific higher being. Some years ago, your mentor, an Older Religious Figure Having a Crisis of Faith, came to this cabin to do battle with the last set of monstrous Demons to plague central Michigan; the last you ever heard from him was the letter he left you informing you of his decision to go.

Well, if the Demons have returned, you have total confidence in your ability to pick up the sword left behind by your former teacher, and stand against the dark tide that is coming. Let monsters come what may: you will face them with unshakable sense of purpose, iron will, and tremendous physical bravery. They will cower at your coming.

Oh, and if you touch a Demon, you’ll die.

Good luck!

POWERS:

1. The power of a denominationally-nonspecific higher being flows through you. Once per Night, you may lay your hands upon another player, and allow this power to flow into them. If they are not a Deadite from the bowels of Hell, nothing at all will happen.

If they are a Deadite of any variety, they will be permanently and divinely marked with a heavenly sign upon their brow, visible to all, indicating that the player you touch is a Deadite. Unfortunately, in leaving the sign, you will be consumed by the heavenly flames that etch this sign, and die. No Deadite is immune to this ability. We offer no assurances that all your enemies are, in fact, Deadites.
So you see, my power is not “finding out what role they are” based…it is touch based.
Still, I worried a bit, to Storyteller, that my power would work the first Night due to 1. NAF holding the book and 2. NAF casting that Night shroud curse on himself.

Asked I:

> [@](#):
>
> Does the book supercede my powers, basically? Can outside forces make it so my power fails? You said no Deadite is immune, so I assume that means no…
>
> ..If I’m wrong, I’d like to know so I can change my target to someone else and be able to get some info (rather be told toNight’s didn’t work based on NAF using that curse).
>
> Will my power work over any book power? Or, if you can’t answer that/be that specific: Will my power work, all the time, for sure? Or can other forces make it so it doesn’t work?

Answered he:

> [@](#):
>
> Your power is not, in the strictest sense, investigative. If you touch a Deadite, you’ll die. If you touch a non-Deadite, you won’t die.

That gave me peace of mind…so I went ahead and touched NAF last night (heh).

Come Day, I got this message from Story:

> [@](#):
>
> You touched **NAF1138**. You are very much not dead. **NAF1138** is not a Deadite.

So NAF cannot be a demon. If he was, I’d be dead and he’d have had the mark placed on him showing him to be scum to everyone else.

That’s my role and power. I touch one person every Night. If they’re a Demon/Deadite, I will die automatically…but THEY will be outed, at Day, as scum to all the other players.

The reasons I’m claiming are threefold.

First (and the main reason), is because of the growing suspicion that my actions (not finding NAF shady anymore after Day started) have probably already tripped scum’s meters. I’m sure they’ve already considered the strong possibility that my complete 180 came from finding out something last Night. I doubt they’ll want to take any chances. This quote only solidified it in my head:

\*\*

> [@Telcontar](#):
>
> I’d wonder if he had a power role but, given that the book was stolen at dawn, NAF would have come up as scum last night, even to the cop.

I think Telcontar is scum. I’ve been suspicious of him/her most the game, so far. And since he/she is saying he/she’s considered this, I’m pretty sure scum would have tried to kill me off the next Night.
Secondly, I came out with it because hopefully, if there’s some kind of protective role out there, they can protect me if they believe me. If I didn’t claim, there’d be no reason to protect me toNight and I’d be at risk of being killed off by scum who think I might have investigative powers..or a Vig/Third Party killing role who might be suspicious. At least this way, I have the chance at being believed by a protector and might be protected.
And third/last, I’m tired of this “Is NAF lying?” nonsense. Really, it’s a huge distraction right now and one that I can easily fix. **NAF is not a Deadite** , so I’m leaning more toward he’s NOT lying about not having the book anymore nor at how he lost it.
Yes, he may still be a malicious third party..so that’s why I still said I had wariness of him. And yes, he still could be lying if he’s a third party… BUT…he is not a Deadite. So take that as you will.

* * *

So there you have it. I know my lasting in this game won’t be for long now…but if I’m protected at Night somehow, I’ll continue to try to find Demons.
Right now I’m pointing fingers at **One and Only Wanderers, Telcontar, Guiri** , and **Drain Bead**. The first three for their riding me about my lost suspicion of NAF. As I already said, I think scum figured it could have come from some sort of Night power…so those three really looked like they were fishing for it and trying to force me to claim. Well, it worked…good news for them.
Bad news for them…I’ll be touching those four in SOME random order the next few Nights pending my being alive in the game AND pending there not being another suitable suspect. What order, I’ll not be saying…let them, if they’re scum, WiFoM it. 🙂
Last thought: I think scum will now want me out asap (so I don’t have the chance to touch anyone else toNight)…so they’ll try to draw doubt on my claim.

yes, but i have no clue to the customization of said roles. i know that mine is markedly different. and so to toss another confirmed town role into the mix seems not prudent from a town stand point.

Oh screw this Peeker. Now that I have an investigator confirming me there is no reason for me to keep playing the game the way I have been.

Here is my vanilla PM (no one is surprised that I am vanilla right? It’s not like I am sharing some sort of secret at this point).

Evil Dead Mafia: Role PM
Welcome to the game; you are the Grizzled Cop

ALIGNMENT: Town
GENERIC: Vanilla
WIN CONDITION: All Scum and malicious third-parties (if any) have been vanquished.

BACKGROUND:

You know the drill. Three months ago, you announced your impending retirement from the force after 30 mostly uneventful years of providing dedicated service to the good taxpayers of central Michigan. In the time since, you have faced down three terrorists bent on world domination, personally defused a bomb, been stabbed by a serial killer, fought off an alien invasion, and dutifully trained a Volatile but Well-Meaning Young Cop Who Does Things According to His Own Set of Rules.

You’re too old for this shit. You took a gig working security for this dopey reality show in the woods hoping it would be an easy paycheck in the week leading up to your retirement. But when the first snarling demon rose up from the bowels of hell to drink the hot bubbling blood of the living, deep down inside you weren’t particularly surprised.

Guess you picked the wrong week to give up cheap beer.

POWERS:

1. You have no special powers, abilities, or information. You’re too old for this shit, remember?

Great. We got priests touching people in the dark.

NAF, can you show me on this doll where that dirty ole priest touched you?

And by that, I mean, can you confirm what Idle’s saying?

The whole thing seems plausible. Idle, don’t take this the wrong way, but I really really thought you were playing badly earlier. The whole 180 on NAF with the specious reasoning? That’s just not like you. In light of the claim, it all makes sense now.

Unvote NAF

I’ll probably be putting my vote back on Telcontar today. I don’t think Peeks needs any help swinging.

Bwahahahahahahaha.

Awesome.

Idle:
So you’re suspicious of a long list of players (I think you’re even leaving a few off) for questioning your complete and, given public information, totally inexplicable change of heart? This makes less sense than your change of heart itself did. Even if your claim is genuine, you still need to use logic. It helps, really. Also, given that I DISMISSED the notion that your change of heart came from you being a power role, under the assumption that a power role would have been misled by the Book last night, your claim now is at best bad play. What is it with power roles claiming early this game?

Total:
Recall peeker’s comment that he thought NAF said he lost the book came BEFORE NAF actually lost the book. there really isn’t a credible way that peeker could have known in advance that NAF would say he lost the book at dawn apart from NAF telling peeker as much on the scum board. Also, NAF was gaining suspicion for holding the book, which might be cause for a scum player to claim to have lost it.

I don’t know what to make of idle’s claim and his vouching for NAF yet. I’ll have to process. Even if the claim is valid, however, I’m inclined to totally discount idle’s suspicions because his (public) behavior really has been nonsensical, and therefore deserving of suspicion.

Yes…there is. If someone else had told Peek that I was going to lose the book, that would be credible. Why would it have had to be me?

Not a long list..just four.
Nope, not leaving anyone else off. Out of everyone who didn’t believe me, the three of you ( **OAOW, Guiri** , and you) are the only ones that struck me as fishing for a role. Others who didn’t believe me or whom showed they were questioning it (Special Ed, Brewha, Mahaloth, texcat) didn’t strike me as fishing at all.

Nice try at getting me suspicious of others though..not going to work. One of you four is getting the next touch.
