# Excel question - COUNTIF by month?

Thanks for the response, Cooking with Gas. Yes, unfortunately, I did try all of the suggestions, to no avail, for a range crossing over columns and rows. I did get most of them to work for individual columns, but not multiple columns without doing the formulas for each column.

The dates are entered into a software database, pulled into a report, then dumped into Excel. The dates are entered through a date picker and display as mm/dd/yyyy. (I’ve tried changing them into multiple formats, but that didn’t help either.) They will be in no particular order. What I need Excel to do is take all of the dates, in say a 100 row by 100 column spreadsheet, which will vary month to month, and calculate how many dates are for a particular month. Does that make sense?
