> I don’t think it’s “one thing,” but if I had to simplify, it’s rock steady rhythm section and lots of syncopation.

Hmm, I seem to have missed posts including this and past. Dammit.

**puly** , thanks for the links to the missing episodes. I saw the QotSA one - really great. I _loved_ how he played the parts on piano and they sounded just like Bach in terms of how the lines moved against each other. And then the hidden fully horn section - so badass.

As for the quote above - in terms of the “one thing” that boils down a great Stones or AC/DC type riff, yes, very much so - a great rhythm groove with syncopation is a thing of beauty.

That’s not what I mean. I mean the inclusion of a passing note - those sus2’s and sus4’s we were discussing upthread - that take a simple D to A, or G to C and put them more in motion so there is melodic tension and resolution over the changing chords. Grooving those in the right place are the difference between boneheaded cowboy chords and coming up with a riff for the ages.

They work especially well over a two-chord vamp type song, you know?

> In Camila Cabello’s “Havana” we hear both her Cuban roots and the modern sounds of Atlanta. Though the singer and featured guest Young Thug reference these two geographic identities, the song says so much more through its core musical elements. A Roland TR-808 kick drum evokes an entire repertoire of Atlanta Hip Hop, while the track’s supporting piano montuno descends from a Cuban style lamenting the loss of one’s traditional home.

> Also in this episode, we discuss Cabello’s unlikely path to number one with writer Hannah Steinkopf-Frank — and the musical glass ceiling that holds so many young women artists back.

I can’t recommend this podcast highly enough.

I was _just_ given a strong recommendation to dig into this album. Now I’ll have a guide.

Oh sweet. Good choice. I expected something older. Bolnde fits his style well too. More musical than wordy.
