Experiences with U.S. Health Care - Pt II: Payment

Last December 25 my wife had to go to the Emergency Roomand was admitted for tests. Since this happened 550 miles from home, she was obviously “out of network” with her PPO.

Since then, the insurance company has denied every claim related to the incident. Fortunately, my wife is a fanatical record-keeper, with notebooks full of details about the claims, why they were disallowed, who she called, what they said, etc.

On appeal, the insurance company has accepted all the claims, but it’s all a game. They deny, she appeals, they stall, she pushes, they accept. It’s like “we’ll approve your claims, but you have to show us you really, really want it.”
