The powerd stuff didn’t make it into the logs because it is in the middle of them. It looks like this, just searching for powerd:

2/8/16 3:41:12.207 PM powerd[53]: Registering for UPS devices
2/8/16 3:41:12.207 PM powerd[53]: UPSDeviceAdded. _alreadyRunningIOUPSD:0

2/8/16 4:25:11.291 PM powerd[53]: PowerManagement: UPS low power warning

Why I’m pointing this out, is that sometimes when it boots normally, I have noticed a flash on the screen just before the login prompt. I was video recording it once, and was able to see what the message was. It was complaining that the UPS was low powering or something like that. This Mac Mini is connected via USB to a Smart-APC UPS. This could be a long-shot, but I am wondering if the UPS might be causing a condition that during boot it is doing something with powerd because it detects a UPS low power warning.

What I’m wondering is, if this is causing the boot at hang intermittently because it doesn’t have good error handling when this occurs and causes the Mac to wait until the consider has changed or been updated. These are the only powerd process messages I see in the logs, but I am getting the same messages when it boots normally too. But when it had trouble booting it occurred 1 second after it got the BOOT_TIME where when it booted normally the messages for powerd started 3 seconds after it. Maybe it missed the interval.

My theory could be completed out in left field. Plus I don’t know a way to test this. I don’t know how to cause a UPS low power warning from the UPS. I guess I could put it in self-test mode, then boot the Mac Mini and if it gets stuck, pull out the USB cable connected to the UPS and see if it continues.

No, I’ve not had the SSD replaced. But I’ve not seen any errors in the logs related to it, doesn’t show any problems on Disk Utility and none of the Apple Hardware diagnostics showed up anything either. I try to push them in that direction when I first took the system in, but the Apple service tech seem to feel it was the logic board.

Seems like if there was a problem with the SSD there would be errors in the logs about it. But I guess it is possible not all hardware problems produce conditions which can be logged. Like the power supply, if it was acting flaky I don’t know if it would be logged either.

With so many Apple specific things that it contains in the logs, I don’t know how serious or normal any of them could be. I have looked at normal log boots and they are just as verbose.

I don’t think there is anything on the Mac OS which would cause it to be polling for a source externally like from the internet it can’t find and it is just waiting for it.

Not forgotten, but I was waiting to compare the boot with a Mac Mini of similar age I just upgraded. It is depressingly hard to directly compare, even small differences in the user setup lead to a lot of extra junk.

But there is one thing that looks odd to say the least. Right before the obvious start of slowdown in the log one sees:

2/8/16 3:42:11.436 PM launchd[1]: BUG in libdispatch: 15D21 - 1631 - 0x0
2/8/16 3:42:43.030 PM warmd[60]: [warmctl_evt_timer_bc_activation_timeout:286] BC activation bcstop timer fired!

I have a feeling that there is an existing application, that warmd is trying to pre-warm files for, that has left something bad, and there is something nasty happening.

Have you tried booting in safe mode? That will avoid a lot of the extra junk, and apparently force a rebuild of some of the cached information. This might help, or at lest help pinpoint the issue.

Thanks so much for the update and your efforts!!!

I’m not familiar with ‘warmd’. It doesn’t exist on CentOS Linux, but I just did a ‘man warmd’ on a Mac and found this:

warmd(8) BSD System Manager’s Manual warmd(8)

NAME
warmd

DESCRIPTION
warmd controls caches used during startup and login. It is not meant to
be invoked directly.

Darwin February 11, 2016 Darwin

AppleCare convinced me once again to bring it in to repair to check it out, so I don’t have access to the system at the moment. But I do have the logs! I have the logs from December, 2015 when it had this problem then and those two lines from the log you quoted appear in there exactly like that then.

I have a Mac Pro which has been operating fine on the same OS as the Mac Mini, and nothing in the Console logs even have a “warmd”. I guess the big question here, is why is this even being run?

I’ve not tried safe mode. The problem with it getting “stuck” on boot doesn’t occur each time. What could be creating this event and why? Could it be something wrong in the hardware that causes this process to be run intermittently?

After the AppleCare wiped it clean, I’ve only put a few applications on it and I didn’t restore from backup. I was trying to run it as simple as possible to see if the problem would point to the hardware. Is this cache as in /var/cache sort of thing like on Linux, or is this referring to cache at a lower level for the SSD?

I have Googled searched since your posting about those messages and they come up with people complaining about problems at boot, so this looks related especially since I don’t see those messages in normal running Mac Pro of the same OS version.
