Damn near every Friday night while I was 17 into 18 I went in the late 80’s. I have 53 ticket stubs squirrled away as a momento of my youth. We went because it was something to do at midnight on a Friday. It was something outragous that baffled our parents. Even if my Mom bought rice enough to supply us. Yelling back at a movie screen? Throwing rice, shooting squirtguns into the air while holding newspapers over our heads? Launching hotdogs across the room? Items we had to “smuggle” into the theater. Looking back at it now as a 44 year old I see it as harmless anarchy. At the time it seemed subversive and crazy. Pre internet, 9-11, Columbine, we were the crazy kids oh-so normal the rest of the week. As we grew up in our 20’s and my friends were getting married off, we did the time warp at several Weddings. The looks of bafflement of the faces of the older folks are some of my fondest memories of those cookie cutter Weddings. ---

I saw the stage show here in Topeka, Kansas, long after it had been first a stage show, then a movie. What made attendance really fun was that to get to the university theater, where it was being performed, you had to pass by a picket line from the Westboro Baptist Church, that was telling us we were all going to hell. The costumes were so cool, I’m glad they didn’t try to copy the movie. Frank-n-furter wore pink and lavender Fredericks of Hollywood stuff. ---
