Really, now. Is the fact that this song was a #1 hit due to no more than a catchy tune with some amusing imagery in the lyrics, or was the whole country stoned when I was born? This is what gets on the charts? We’re cheering in righteous indignation about truckers so they can speed? Did the country just suddenly switch its attention from Vietnam and Watergate to “Convey” as though they were of equal weight?
Indeed, I remember the endless commercials for the K-Tel Album of truck driver songs the aired after school on TV.
First, they came for the speeding truckers, and I did not say anything because I was not a speeding trucker…

I learned how to drive a truck, and did a number of runs too. But I didn’t do it because of the song; and to the best of my knowledge, I was the only one from my high school class who did.
