I’m not @GargoyleWB but I think I found his meaning pretty clear. AIUI:
Back in the Olden Dayes of our youth, fans tried to collect albums as soon as they were available. It was a source of status and other fans who were friends would visit in person for the privilege of hearing that latest album they could not yet get. Scarce goods are the status-conferring goods, and albums were the scare goods.
By contrast, nowadays in the streaming era, album scarcity is utterly gone. Anyone can have all the latest must-have music instantly as it’s released. So instead what confers status among fans is seeing the artist in person. That’s the scarce good in 2023, so that’s the status-conferring good in 2023.
