I hate almost all commercials. That is why they invented the Mute button, which I use so often sometimes it wears out.
The phone number for the Dallas Times-Herald Classified section was 748-1414.
The Dallas Times-Herald closed in 1991, and I can still remember the jingle.
I don’t have time to do a search right now and provide coherent and cogent sites, but “being remembered”, or rather a sense of familiarity is a big part of the buying decision.
People tend to gravitate towards brands that they trust (unsurprisingly), what is not so well explicitly considered is that trust is built by repeated “impressions” over different mediums at different times. In other words, the more we see a brand the more we feel we know it, and the more we trust et al - this applies even if the amount of knowledge held is actually low.
So in a nutshell, what the ad is also doing, by “standing out” to you is at the same time building trust. Even if you are not looking at an awning right now, and may not even explicitly remember the brand, when you do go searching for awnings when you see the brand name it will (suposedly) resonbate with you and there is a greater chance you will buy from them.
Also - as mentioned above - it is a call to action. Those with letters A-M think, “jeeze I’m lucky, I better get in now” those that don’t qualify think “why not me - I want that” and call anyway (on the basis that the best way to make something attractive to a child is to tell them they can’t have it)
ATTENTION: THIS IS A PUBLIC POST
The things I’m saying right now are tautologically true, but have an air of authority due to the way I am saying them. I am selling goods or services.
THIS HAS BEEN A PUBLIC POST POSTED TO A PUBLIC BOARD
Actually I’ve seen cases where the purpose of the ad was to get an (ad)industry award for the ad agency and boost the marketing director’s expenditure budget to make him feel a big noise.
Very annoying - especially if it is ones budget that has been raided.
In some places this is a big rort against the award - agencies will create ads probono specifically for the award, then run it in some obscure magazine with a circulation of 3 chickens and 2 ducks just to qualify for the award…
