When I stumbled across the Dope, it was a very bad time in my life and I was a practically house-bound, near agoraphobic shut-in who avoided any kind of social interaction online or in real life. And I’m female. So hermette it was. Life is infinitely better and different now, and I’m back to being a social butterfly, so I really must get around to thinking up a new name one of these days! ---

Am a capital guy! ( but not a capital city so I don’t capitalise my username) For a short time I was SmoginManila as well… there’s a lot of smog in Manila and Smoggie is a nickname applied to people who come from my original hometown in NE England. ---

Jack is a nickname for my real name, and reference to Jack of Tales / Jack of all Trades / etc. Leonardo is one of my favorite historical figures. ---

I had this idea for a series of children book where the hero Will the Kitten battles all kinds of robot-dinosaur-ninja-pirates enemies, and each book would end with the most impossible meteor-tsunami-volcano-spacelaser cliffhanger,ending with sentence “Will the Kitten survive?” and the readers could submit ways the hero escapes, and the best ones would be the first chapter of the next book in the series Also the quantum physics thing……… ---

I’m a fan of Canadian fantasy/alt-history writer Guy Gavriel Kay - at least up until _the Sarantine Mosaic_, after which he seems to have lost his mojo. Alessan is one of the (male!) protagonists of his greatest work, _Tigana_. ---

No big backstory. I stole it from Jack Vance (it struck my funny bone from a footnote in The Green Pearl) almost twenty years ago for use on AOL, and it seems to have grown around me. I do, however, now only rarely describe myself as a Charlatan. ---

My self-chosen Chinese name is Shi Hushi. 史胡豕. The first character, my family name, I actually inherited - my grandfather was involved in China way back in the 20s and was given that same surname; it means ‘Scholar’ or ‘Historian.’ The second character means ‘beard,’ referencing my excellent mustache, but in simplified characters it also means ‘foreign’ or ‘barbarian.’ The last character means ‘pig’ or ‘boar,’ but 1) it’s an uncommon character so I have to write it for people, showing off my leet skills, 2) it technically means not pig but boar, which is a much more badass animal, and 3) it just looks so _filthy._ It’s definitely not a name you get from your Chinese teacher, and part of my progress as a language student was picking myself a name that wasn’t just a direct transliteration of my given name. ---

I absolutely love foie gras and have zero moral qualms about how its made, etc. I just don’t give a shit. Here’s the problem: I don’t earn enough money to eat it regularly as its so damn expensive. Hence it’s evil…it eludes me with regularity. The username is also a poke in the eye to PETA-types, whom I have nothing but utter contempt for. Of course THEY see the username and think “ah…a friend!”, so I’ve got that going for me I suppose. And no, I don’t weigh 300lbs. I’m more like two-fiddy. OK, I’m not even two hundred…but I would be if I could get my hands on some damn foie gras! ---

I’m very accident prone. Have been my entire life. On a different messageboard, I was always regaling friends and strangers with my tales of misadventure, and I received a few nicknames from it. Mr. Accident, Super Accident Man, Booboo Bear. Mr. Accident was my favorite, so I started using it as a handle. ---

His nickname was Sparky and despite my best efforts, I was dubbed Sparky Jr. (even though we were unrelated). He left about midway through my academic career but it was too late. I was very active on campus with Frosh Week, students council, played guitar, worked on the concert crew and at the campus bar, I became fairly popular and partied alot. The Jr. got dropped, but everyone still called me Sparky. In the early days of the internet, Sparky worked fine, but as it grew unique usernames became harder to compose and adding numbers were usually reccommended. So I added the 812 suffix as a nod to Van Halen’s OU812 (Oh You Ate One Too)thus becoming Sparky Ate One Too!
