The news was showing the photo of the 8 year old that died. He was there with his mother and sister to watch his father cross the line. His mother was having brain surgery and his 5 (or 6) year old sister lost her leg. I’m sick ---

One of the last things I’d equate the Boston Marathon with is “rich white folks” People come from all over the world to run this race and it is known as a huge multicultural event. I was listening to the radio this morning (98.5 the sports hub) and one of the hosts (Rich) lives in the building that one of the bombs went off in front of. He was on air this morning telling about how he was right where it went off with his son about 15 minutes before the explosion. He then described how he tried to get his family out of the building (his wife was JUST released from the hospital from having chemotherapy and isn’t supposed to be doing any physical activity) and having to hide his kids faces as the bombs blew people in to his lobby through the windows. ---

I feel very fortunate. My step-daughter and step-grandson went to the Red Sox game yesterday, and after the game were walking back to their car and decided to walk up to the finish line to see it as they never had done so before. They were walking that way about 50 yards from the second explosion when it occurred, and were hustled away by police. My step-daughter is still pretty shaken and breaking out in tears periodically, but the 13-year-old seems OK at the moment, although I understand he was quite angry and upset immediately following the explosion. My wife is somewhat concerned by his relative stoicism. Unfortunately, I am away on business in Chicago and am unable to be of any real assistance to them. It’s all just so horrible, but seeing the video, it really seems like it could have been much worse casualty-wise. ---

Given the fact the majority of his injuries were to the lower extremities it is relatively easy to isolate the blood loss and save the person. Due to the carnage we’ve seen in the last 20 years modern medicine is light years ahead of where we were in dealing with traumatic wounds. We did stories in the 90’s about British military doctors being sent to intern in Baltimore so they could learn how to handle gunshot wounds. After the last decade I am sure the collective medical knowledge of traumatic injuries has been greatly expanded, at great cost.
