Eyebrow waxing

Well, I had it done.

It took about twenty minutes.

First she wiped the area with alcohol…to get the makeup off, I guess.

Since I’d never had done before the woman trimmed them first with scissors. (No, I don’t have Neandrathal brows.) She asked me not to talk while she was trimming, since that made my face move.

Then she put some (Vaseline?) on and then dusted with powder.

Since I had to keep my eyes closed the whole time, I can only describe what it felt like.

Then she used when felt like a pencil to draw the wax on the top part of the brow. She then applied the paper and ripped. It didn’t hurt too much.

She warned doing the bottom part would hurt more, and it would hurt the most because this was the first time doing it.

She then did the pencil thing on the bottom part and waxed off. That did hurt a bit more…my eyes began to water.

She then took a tweezer and “fine-tuned” the plucking. I think that bothered me the most, probably because my brows were already irritated and it wasn’t all at once, like the waxing, but more of a series of little mosquito stings.

She then used a nice smelling oil and I had a look in the mirror.

She said they were still kind of thick compared to hers (which looked like straight crayola brown lines) but they did bring out my eyes more.

The redness disappeared by bedtime.

Since it was the first time I’d had them done, I tipped her $3 on a $10 job. She wasn’t the chattiest person, and if I had a suggestion, I would say that since the client has their eyes closed, a running commentary on what the waxer is going to do would be nice. I jumped when she touched my face because I wasn’t expecting it. (Sort of like when you’re at the OB/GYN…so you know what to expect.)

I believe I will have it done again. It wasn’t too bad an experience, and I like the way it makes my face look.

Why dont you try tweezing? It works. It is not painful, and not much trouble and not required to be done very often either.

First, if you have a strongly defined brow then you might just want to consider tweezing and following you easy-to-follow natural line since it will save you a lot of money (this is basically what I do since I’m cheap!)

However, I would also recommend threading. If I weren’t a po law student on loans I might try it to see if it made a substantial difference in presentation. All my girlfriends do it and strongly recommend it over waxing. Keep in mind that we’re all either Indian, Pakistani or Middle Eastern so it’s largely a cultural preference thing.

Here are some facts about the procedure.
FAQ on Threading

As far as where you could go to get this done-like I said, most of the people that I know that prefer it are either Indian or Middle Eastern and tend to have an “in” with someone from back home that provides beauty services in a really small establishment or in their home-so I can’t direct you to any biggish type of salons that are known to do it. If you live in the Chicago or Boston area I can provide names-since I have links to these areas. Otherwise, I am at a loss as to where you would go about having it done-I’ve never seen it at any of the Western salons I frequent.

I’ve been getting my eyebrows waxed on a regular basis for at least 3 years and it still hurts like hell! Last time when I got them done, I think the wax was too hot because the next day I had these weird “scab” things under my eyebrows where she had ripped the hair off. It hurt for like 2 days, but the scabs were fun to pull off. You couldn’t see them, just feel them.

Occasionally I will get a “bleeder”, where one hair gets ripped out too hard or something and it makes a tiny drop of blood.

Oh my gawd…I can only imagine the pain of a Brazilian bikini wax…That’s probably the one area I’d never ever do.

Say WHA? I’ve never had any experiences with blood…who have you been going to?! I don’t know that I’d return to a waxer who left me with blood…

I always bleed a little bit when I have my eyebrows waxed. My skin is pretty sensitive. It’s not a big deal, really.

I keep hearing about threading - but I’ve never actually seen it offered anywhere. Ever.

Tweezing could take weeks with my eyebrows. I’d never leave home.

The only slightly long term effect of waxing I don’t like is that I have lighter skin closer to my brows than I do toward my lashes, and much much lighter under where the brows grow naturally - for a few days after I get my eyebrows waxed, it looks like I went nuts “highlighting the area under the brow bone”

All of them. It’s not huge gaping wounds - it’s a few droplets here and there (not every former hair bleeds, just a few here and there, and never that much.)
The ones I didn’t go back to were the one who gave me romulan triangle eyebrows, the “hypo-allergenic” wax people who left my face broken out for a week, the evil person who burned me with wax that was too hot (it didnt’ feel that different, but the burn mark was a clue).
And now that ivylass has had it done, I can tell waxing horror stories.
