One of my friends recently got into a debate on Facebook (I know) with a guy who said “It’s really hard to choose to be straight all the time” with a (NPI) straight face. All he could say was “It isn’t if you’re actually straight.” ---

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. “Why does Clothahump even post around here with this shit?” I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and let you admit to your views on homosexuality being a deviant “choice” have changed, but that doesn’t seem to apply. **Clothy** , if you could, please elaborate on how it’s a choice. Is any one of these sequences what you are thinking? Which one, if any, is closest? 1. Person A is only attracted to the opposite sex. 2. Person A, although not attracted to the same sex, has a (non-sexual) desire to be attracted to the same sex. 3. Through sheer will, or perhaps by forcing him or herself, has sex with same-sex partners for which there is no sexual attraction 4. Eventually, perhaps by force of habit, Person A find him or herself sexually attracted to the same sex. OR 1. Person A is only attracted to the opposite sex. 2. Person A, although not attracted to the same sex, has a (non-sexual) desire to be attracted to the same sex. 3. Through sheer will, or perhaps by forcing him or herself, has sex with same-sex partners which there is no sexual attraction 4. Person A never really finds him or herself sexually attracted to the same sex, but manages to slog through homosexual sex anyway, to justify the choice. OR 1. Person A is only attracted to the opposite sex. 2. Person A, although not attracted to the same sex, has a (non-sexual) desire to be attracted to the same sex. 3. That is enough; the simple desire to be gay results in a newly-awakened sexual attraction to the same sex that did not previously exist. OR 1. Everybody is actually naturally sexually attracted to both sexes. 2. Person A, in an attempt at self-identification, decides he or she is gay, and henceforth only has sex with the same sex. However, this person could still choose to have sex with only the opposite sex, or both. OR 1. Everybody is actually naturally sexually attracted to the SAME sex. 2. Because of societal norms, most choose to ignore their desires for the same sex, and have sex with the opposite sex. 3. A few choose to simply go with their natural homosexual desires and self-identify as gay. ---

I know this is bucking the local consensus, but I don’t think that genes can determine behavior as completely as what some of you are making out. Environment also must play a part or much of what I learned in college (and since) was dead wrong. Personal choice must influence behavior as well, or my own experience and observations are completely invalid. I’m not working the job that I have, married who I married, and living where I live solely because of my genotype. It seems awfully convenient that both sides of the argument have science supposedly on their side. I have my doubts. In any event, I have no problem with a person deciding to be gay because she likes it better than being straight, like Cynthia Nixon said she did, as it’s harmless. I also have no problem if somebody decides he or she is gay because they have no choice in the matter because of uh, genes ‘n’ stuff, if that’s what makes them happy, because that’s also harmless.
