In much the same way that Absence of Malice was Wiford Brimley’s movie.

Ziegler and Kidman’s character were in fact in a scene together briefly. Right after Kidman’s and Cruise’s characters arrived at Ziegler’s party they bumped into Ziegler with his wife and had a short conversation with them.
