Yes you did, America. From this one conservative, may I say that the current US administration’s conservatism had gone too far, and needed to be pulled back into line. I believe that has happened today. Sincere congratulations to all the SDMB Obama suporters. I think a good thing has happened. In fact, it’s also the best thing that could have happened for the decent people in the Republican party - and in the long run, for that party itself. Now, try not to gloat too much, y’all (you’re allowed a few days, though). 😉 ---

I thought both McCain’s and Obama’s speeches last night were great. I think “Yes we can!” has become the official slogan of the 2010s. Which start now, IMNSHO. I’m happy to leave the “Oh-No decade” behind a little early. When I was growing up in the early '60s my Mom’s best friend was part of an inter-racial couple. There were states in the country where they - a legally married couple - could not travel. The US has changed for the better. Yesterday’s vote is the most recent culmination of that. During Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, and again last night, I was reminded of the words in the first quote here from the [“I have a dream” speech](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_have_a_dream_speech#Key_excerpts). > [@The Rev. As a Brit I don’t have any say in this but I was personally thrilled that Obama got in. I am really looking forward to seeing how he does in office. I did however think that McCain’s speech conceding defeat was very, very gracious and fair and though I don’t like his policies I do recognise and respect him as an honest, honourable man. ---

I’d like to join in the dancing, and I hope our fellow conservatives/republicans will join us in dancing, too. I feel more one with the rest of the country today than I have in a long time. I haven’t had a chance to see all of the speeches yet - tonight I’ll watch them. But I am also surprised and pleased at all of the foreigners celebrating us. Yay, America! ---

At first - very early on in the campaign - I still wanted the Pubbies to win. Then I went towards a feeling of not minding either way. Only the last couple of weeks, I’ve been actively hoping for an Obama win, and yesterday was when I realised I was decidedly caught up in it all. So yeah. **links arms with Anaamika and whirls around stupidly a couple of times** Part of my conservatism is a defensive attitude, and Obama’s charisma scared me (many dictators have been charismatic). There was a post on one of the merged threads asking me and other non-us dopers why we were so interested/happy that Obama won, i cant find the post in the new thread, so i’ll answer it here: I was going to post a long, elaborate post, explaining it all, but then i read the transcript of Obamas speech. Hmm… at the risk of needing to send this to GD, it’s often the US who is at the forefront of butting in when they have no business there as well. SO I think that evens things out a little. If you always want to play the big shot, it is no surprise that people might want you to stick to your guns. ---

This morning I woke up feeling weird. I hopped out of bed instead of crawling. Then I noticed a strange echoing in my ears like after a rock concert. I felt kind of like I was dizzy, but had no trouble standing straight. I thought maybe I was coming down with something, or maybe didn’t get enough sleep. Then I remembered why I was up so late last night and I got it. This strange, unfamiliar feeling must be that ‘hope’ thing I’ve heard so much about. It’s the first time in eight years that I’ve woken up looking forward to _anything_. It’s not dizziness–I’m literally **giddy**! Now I’m going to call up my stupid brother and say, “neener, neener, neener!” The weird thing is that, in a way, we have Dubya to thank for this. If he hadn’t so deeply and thoroughly destroyed all the credibility that the Republican Party ever had, this very well might not have happened. ---
