I mean, I spent an evening a couple years ago looking at one of his fan sites. MIL wanted to watch Miss America (she knew somebody who knew somebody who was related to Miss West Virginia, who unfortunately didn’t even place) and His Clayness performed. So I decided to check and see what comments the Claymates had, and they were **livid** , on account of while he was singing “There She Is…” the network ran a voiceover about upcoming shows and you couldn’t hear him. I mean, they were composing irate letters to the producers, and condemning the pageant and who knows what all. Then I checked out some other threads, and it was scary. Summing it up was a thread in which one poster suggested that the other fans ease back and stop doing stuff like hold their baby up at meet’n’greets so Clay could touch it as if he was going to heal it, and following the tour bus to the hotel, and so forth. Either she or someone else said, “C’mon, guys; he wasn’t born in a manger!” So my **point** is, if he did come out, assuming he has someplace to come out from, which would upset their worldview less: rejecting him entirely, or admitting the possibility that a person can still have all the supermessiah qualities they think he has and be gay at the same time? ---

Believe it or not, I’ve never given Clay Aiken (or his sexuality, or his career, or his messiahlike abilities to heal) a whole lot of thought. I think Clay Aiken has a great voice. There, I’ve said it. I am not crazy about the material he does on his records (er, CDs) but his voice is awesome. I’m 41, married, and don’t care if he’s gay or not. I have a lot of embarrassing stuff in my music collection, and shan’t cast stones. ---

I only read the fan sites for amusement. Most of the internet fans scare me. However, I think that the majority of people who secretly listen to Clay’s music really don’t care if he’s gay. BTW, his new CD comes out on 9/19, if you happen to like covers of cheesy 1980’s power ballads (like me). Oh, and I only joined the fan club to get better concert tickets. ---

Is it okay to dislike Clay Aiken because he (or rather a metric shitload of psycho Claymates) made it in-fucking-possible to go to my Brother-in-law’s graduation? Oh yeah, I also think he looks like a poor man’s Martin Short. ---

I saw Clay Aiken sing the national anthem at a NASCAR race (either in '05 or '04). I still consider that pretty odd. Clay is the perfect crush. He’s safe and as sexually innocous as a newly neutered puppy. The perfect match for pre-sexual girls and asexual women. Not the most happening fan club in town, but perhaps no wierder than wanting to get intimate with an anime character. I consider them equally, if differently, deviant. ---
