I think this is the first time the person with immunity used it to a ‘game’ type victory - in times past, the contestant with Immunity usually went “all out” and took chances - she phoned it in and, while I think Matt didn’t have the talent to win overall, helped escort whoever her partner was out the door.
She can be quoted as saying “Remember, you picked me”.
So, I thought that was a pretty good challenge. And although I agree with the loser, I 100% disagree with the winner. I thought the tree wizard was far superior to George’s. I thought his was so-so.
Next week looks cool. I like anime so this should be interesting.
I had no problem with the winner, I think it was very well done, very cohesive and pretty unique as well. I also had no problem with the loser, although I actually though Niko’s was the worst, it just looked so amateur. But Kat’s was bad and she has been bad for a while actually. Also Kat had no awareness that hers was bad, at least Niko and the other girl on the bottom had the awareness to realize theirs were not good.
I was surprised by Kat’s ejection. I thought she should have been eliminated for last week’s effort, but this week, there’s no way that Niko wasn’t a rock bottom look. His wizard looked like the Tin Woodsman from a grade school performance of the Wizard of Oz. I was actually expecting Niko to be eliminated and the judges maybe to pull out their magic one-time-save.
Also of note – people continue to be just so decent on the show. Even in the midst of a muddled build, Niko poses for another contestant so that he can get the anatomy right. Kat is hugging and comforting Niko after her elimination. It’s just so refreshing to have a reality show where people aren’t scheming psychos.
I am disappointed that the contestants are still going with the basic demon motif. Really only the witch doctor and the voodoo wizard looked basically human.
Okay, so let’s explore this concept. First off, we will ignore the pain element of the horns penetrating the flesh, and we’ll ignore the whole puncturing the lung element. We will assume this supernatural demon can handle that stuff.
But let’s look at the mechanics of the horn growth. Unless this is rapid, instantaneous growth, it’s not going to easily go through like that. Because the person can move their head. So instead of slowly penetrating and working through, the demon will start to lower his head. Then lower his head a bit more, so he won’t get to penetration until his head is at the limit of his neck tilt forward, and possibly bowing his back - I’m not sure where the most room comes in play. But that’s just the mechanics of how you get to the point the horns start growing through his body.
Okay, let’s assume the horns magically get thrust through the torso. Poof. Now, how much can the demon move? Think about it. Head locked in position is just the start. Can he raise his arms? Not really. When you raise your shoulders, you stretch your torso. You’re changing the length of your body between the head and the place where the horns enter the body. So no shoulder lifts, which means arms are stuck still down to elbows. Turning at the waist? Nope - that twists the torso, and again changes the body dimensions in the area of the horns. The horns thrust through the ribcage. Um, rotating is out. So your demon is locked from the hips to the head and down to the elbows. He can walk, but probably not run, and sitting down is a chore. And no lying down - you can’t get there.
See now why I think it’s absolutely preposterous?
Agreed.
Agreed. In fact, Rashaad’s from this week suffered from this effect. It looked like he had circles around the eyes and mouth that were not prosthetic and not painted. I think they actually were painted, but it contrasted the other parts of the face and looked like a glued on facepiece - fake fake fake.
I imagine it includes a swag bag of product, i.e. a casefull of makeup.
I wouldn’t have sent her home over that - though I’d point out she should be more assertive, I’d frankly be more inclined to give her a pass on that. If the design was a disaster, and all the creative elements came from Daran, I’d have to say he’s ultimately the one to go over it, even if she should have contributed or pushed more. But she’d get a warning, and repeatedly having that dynamic would get her sent packing.
Yeah, that’s a little rough. It is a bit of truth, though, because you can’t afford to be in bottom looks if your partner has immunity. But there was plenty wrong that was his fault, even if her contributions were negative.
That creature is pretty preposterous and odd, but I think the eye size is fine. They’re trying to replace two eyes in the same facial size (actually a bigger head), so they need to justify that size of a face. Having an oversized eye works.
I’m not sure she was gaming it. She’s just done three challenges in a row with minimal work, not doing the scope of work of any of the others. She managed to make two of them play out as if they were smart choices, but the goblin one was actually a mistake that got saved by the paint job. And frankly I wasn’t impressed with her shaman wizard character. The judges really liked her paint job and the way she did the head and feathers, but I didn’t. Seems to me she’s getting credit for a design choice that really is just a lack of ability. I wonder when the judges will notice the pattern.
Yes, I didn’t care for George’s. It was weird and didn’t make sense to me. Why is he getting gear texture on his face? Why is there a skin part? I was far more impressed with the tree wizard, though my one criticism would perhaps have been to make the shoulder limbs a bit more assymetrical. Make them look like they come from different places on the torso and still reach about the same height. Do the lopsided thing and make one shoulder stick out a bit.
No, it’s still early to pull that out. They only get one disaster save for the whole season, and there are still enough contestants to find another contestant that can be argued deserves to go. Like this one. Yes, Niko’s concept was hard, and his sculpt and paint did not sell the robot at all. It looked like crap. But Kat’s was also a bad job, and so they give Niko some leeway for not knowing the subject matter well.
Kat’s concept was essentially the flipside of Tyler’s tree wizard, but she mangled it in all her design choices. The flower petal wings were good, but we’ve seen that before. The rest was a mess. The face appliance covered her face and like the judges said, it detracted rather than enhanced. The root texture she wanted to incorporate in the face didn’t look beautiful or integrated, but rather like a contagion. The orange was too much. She should have lightened and brightened the face to pop out from the petals. And then the collage of stuff on her chest didn’t look organic like the tree work - all that stuff on the tree wizard looked like it belonged and made up the tree. Her’s looked like a pile stuffed in the top of her dress.
While I agree, remember that Niko and Kat are actually a couple, so that was more than just comforting a fellow contestant and friend, that was comforting his girlfriend.
Aside from the split-face techno wizard, which scared the hell out of me, this show got another big ball of “meh”. Which sucks, as I’ve been a huge advocate of the show since it premiered.
BTW this was the second time a contestant really didn’t do a whole lot of sculpting or fabrication but still ended up in the top looks because their interpretation of the challenge and their execution were of the highest caliber.
For the bottom looks, I would have been okay with either Niko or Cat being eliminated. It was like whichever one I was looking at in the moment was the worst one.
I didn’t quite see exactly what the judges liked so much about George’s. In my opinion, Tyler’s tree guy was clearly the best. With George’s wizard, I never really got what the character was supposed to be (even when he explained his design) and I thought the fleshy part of the face looked too separate, stylistically, from the other parts, and unfinished. (And I realize that the judges remarked on how well this particular thing worked for them.)
One thing I like about this season is that Corrine has scored high with several designs that were fairly minimal, but really, really good interpretations of the challenge. Perhaps “subtle” is a better description than “minimal.” The judges seem to value this, even though the results maybe aren’t as a showy for a TV show. It also seems reflective of what a lot of actual professional make up work would be like, not every show is a big budget monster show.
I thought it was odd that at first Niko said his character’s back story was that a wizard built robot who killed him and stole his wand. When talking to the judges, he just used George’s character’s back story.
I guess he had to change his back story since his wizard had part of his human face showing, but to copy a back story of someone else rubbed me the wrong way a little.
Here’s what really struck me about last night’s show: Chloe spent all that time on her filigree, to the point of molding/sculpting all the way down to the crotch of the mannequin. However, both her sketch and her final costume had clothing high up on the hips. She shouldn’t have wasted time making the filigree go any lower than the clothes. How is it that she couldn’t see that?!
I was really surprised by the technical errors that Rashad made. He’s been so good on issues like hiding edges in the past, so to see such obvious mistakes seems out of character.
On a more general note, I’m getting really and truly sick of inspiration coming from “He’s growing into his [object].” They were specifically instructed to do that on the guitar challenge, but it seems like anytime they get an object as an inspiration half of the results are growing into the object. What’s wrong with taking a sci-fi wand and having it belong to the Dumbledore of 2150 AD? Give us a solid old-age makeup, a little cybernetics or something, and a costume to fit a sci-fi period. I swear… if the world worked according to their imagination, half of our population would be a hybrid of a chair and a computer.
In this sense, at least, Corrinne’s design is the only one that seemed truly noteworthy in the latest episode. It wasn’t as outright cool as either the tree or the half-robot design that actually won, but at least she can take inspiration from an object without feeling the need to create some bizarre hybrid with it.
I agree with this. Last night, one of the artists had a concept sketch of a wizard that looked steam punk – top hat and monocle if I remember correctly. That would have been totally rad compared to what we got.
Again, it seems to be a case of here’s a challenge – let’s automatically make a demon with a cowl.
This is one of the best things about the show, and one of the first things my girlfriend and I noticed about the show. Everyone helps everyone. There practically isn’t a week where someone’s mold is stuck and they need a cadre of people to rip it out and everyone does.
Wasn’t there a moment last year when someone (laney maybe?) had a breakdown and one of the guys (tate?) just started working on her shit because he was ahead of schedule and “thought she needed the help”?
I’m watching tonight’s episode that I DVR’d. They just went before the judges. My favorite three are:
The one with four arms.
The one my wife called Vash the Stampede.
Half man, half plant.
My choice for bottom three:
The two women’s characters looked scary, like horror characters. And then George where paint drip dried.
This episode can be summed up in one word for me: YAWN.
And then the big reveal is that no one got eliminated after all? Because, what, the judges use such an objectively rigorous system of scoring that they can’t basically pick who they want to send home at any time?
Honestly, almost every single person did better work in their two-hour oni challenge.
