My prediction for next week’s finale is:
- Tyler
- Rashaad
- George
My prediction for next week’s finale is:
Am I the only one who looked at Rashad’s werewolf and saw pajamas? Seriously… bring that costume back for a “Mom, there’s a monster under my bed” challenge and you’d have it nailed.
Other than that, I pretty much agreed with the judges on the final results.
It was very interesting to see how they played nice with Niko when he was in front of them and then bashed it later. I don’t know if that’s just editing or what. It’s not like he won’t know what they said now that the show has aired.
Finally, is it just me or is the output from the last two weeks some of the worst late-season work we’ve ever seen on Face Off? It’s not all bad… but some of these things seem like projects that could have got you eliminated six episodes ago.
First, I was sour at the very beginning because this challenge was presented as the vampires GREATEST ENEMY (or something like that) and it was … werewolf. I was thinking vampire hunter, and while I know there are a few movies that pit vampire against werewolf, it’s not really like a traditional “greatest enemy” thing. I hate when they make stuff up like this for the show. (Ha, although I always laugh when they have the contestants say things like "this has never happened in the history of Face Off! as if it’s some 100 year tradition instead of season 6.)
I’m relieved Niko is finally out, I surprised he made it this far. It didn’t even look like a wolf, or like a mammal, even!
I can see the appeal of George’s design, and I liked the bit about how it evolved from the vampires … overall though, I find George’s approach to things a little generic and this seemed like more of the same to me. I understand why the judges are so impressed, though.
I was a little surprised that the judges were so harsh with Rashaad. It wasn’t his best work, but I thought it went with his vampire reasonably well. I also thought he was the only one who bothered to make his werewolf try to fit the same cultural tradition of his vampire, and I think that worked ok EXCEPT for …
OMG, right? I see what he was trying to do, but it was totally pajamas. I was so surprised the judges didn’t mention this. It would have even been somewhat better if the werewolf was bursting out of the pajamas (like the Incredible Hulk, I suppose).
Tyler’s was a little meh for me. The judges seemed to love it. I thought it looked like a guy in a rubber mask wearing a padded t-shirt. I do think, given the awfulness of last week’s vampire, that it was hard for him to make the werewolf “match,” because obviously you don’t want to match on the basic of both of them sucking.
I completely agree with this.
I wasn’t crazy about the gold ornamentation on the werewolf, but I agree that the judges were overly harsh. Their main complaint was that the werewolf looked too wispy to take on the equally frail looking vampire. But the point was, it * was supposed to shoot fire out of its hands*. You don’t have to be too physically bad-ass if you’re a lycanthropic flamethrower.
Generally all three of the remaining contestants are pretty solid, but I can’t help feeling that none of them would be favorites if they made the final competition in some earlier seasons. I’m still not seeing the bigger and badder competition that they promised this time around – they made some minor tweaks here and there, and the contestants got to take a neat road trip, but I really wish they’d make the four day build a regular feature.
Well the guest judges for the last two challenges are from the Underworld movie franchise, which is werewolf vs vampire.
Ah, okay, that gives it some context at least. I’m not familiar with that series. It seemed like they were saying it like it was SO obvious, like Superman v. Lex Luthor.
I never really watched any of the movies either, except for a little bit of one of them on TV, but I’m familiar with the franchise because of all of the ads for each movie that came out.
Yep, pajamas. They were going for asian pajama outfit, but it made his werewolf look extra silly.
It felt like they were trying extra hard to compliment it because, like, we couldn’t have someone that sucks make it to the last elimination before the finale.
Absolutely, I am very unimpressed with the last two weeks in particular. Nobody had a real Top Looks for the Vampires, there were a couple of Safes and a couple of Bottom looks, one of which they polished into a Safe. The Werewolves weren’t horrible, but nothing was spectacular.
Yes, they definitely were upselling the challenge. I suppose in the context of “movie monster popularity”, werewolves rank up there as the vampire’s greatest competition. There’s love for ghosts, the occassional mummy, and demons galore, but none get the attention that vampires and werewolves seem to get.
Yea, annoying as shit. “OMG, this has never happened in the previous season we did this show!” Same thing with The Voice.
The gold embellishments weren’t clear what they were, and could have been tied in to the chest. The chest needed painting. It wasn’t obvious he could shoot flame - that wasn’t conveyed in the make up, only in the story and possibly via the theme of the pajamas. There were elements I liked in the sculpt, but those flaws made it 3rd best to me.
I think this challenge is really going to come down to who they have on their teams and how the teams work. Each of the remaining three has good skills but sometimes delivered flops. Each one has good ideas but also dreadful ideas. Nobody has dominated this season leading into the finale the way some other seasons, so I can’t get a read on the judge’s preference.
My gut feel on past work would suggest Tyler, George, Rashaad, but the judges have upvoted George a couple times, giving him a slight edge IMO.
But we’ve seen faves not win before.
If my study of recent literature is accurate, werewolves are vampire’s greatest competition, but only for the hot human chick with eldritch powers. Maybe they should have given the vampires sparkles.
And the season finale…
So the challenge is make two dueling alien species, and then the inspiration is they’re given a constellation: Leo, Ursa Major, Cetus (the whale). The twist is the performance is going to be a dance show by some famous DJ and they have to integrate lights into the makeups.
Now as a personal quibble, first off, constellations are not actual star collections like galaxies. Rather, they are just patterns that appear close based upon our perspective. And second, there is no sensible reason why if we call a clump of stars “Leo, the lion” that the alien species from that planet should be lionesque.
Fortunately, the competitors did not take those obvious cues that the producers seemed to be suggesting, and the judges didn’t say anything about that. That makes me happier. The contestants made their aliens the way they wanted and the judges went with it.
As far as the alien designs, there were some really creative ideas, some fabulous and original looking sculpts. There were also the standard cadre of fabrication problems that create disasters to work around. George had some tears in the face appliances that had to be repaired. Rashaad’s cowl for the female, they were trying to speed the mold drying so they could set the mold overnight, but it didn’t dry. They started opening the mold and it was still wet. They left it overnight and pulled it the next morning and one side of the mold had damage where the separation ruined the surface of the mold. They ran the appliance and had to go for the “battle damage” approach, so they painted it up like burns. His story was the two species were at war, so battle damage worked.
The end results were pretty good for all three teams. George made some comments going in to the Last Looks about his colors being too similar and the paint being muddy, but it was too late to do anything about it. And he was right, the judges had those same issues with his work. However, his sculpts were very creative and original.
Rashaad’s colors used blue and green on the male, and then put yellows and oranges on the female. But what sold his was the light elements worked in to the head and neck, using clear mold pieces to encase the bioluminescence. Tyler used pale blues in the female and then the male was deep red.
The winner ended up being Rashaad, and I could have seen it going to either him or Tyler for these results. George was out IMO because of the paint job, and probably affected the judging. One of the comments about Rashaad’s work was Ve pointing out his season record of only 1 bottom look the entire time. That may have been the deciding factor. It seemed close.
Silly me. I liked Tyler’s the best, followed by George, and finally Rashaad.
Tyler - Other than the red ball the female was holding, no complaints.
Rashaad - I loved the female better than all the other aliens, but with the male I thought his face looked a little too cartoon-y.
George - Not much light from either alien, and I thought the red part of the female’s chest was meh.
I’m happy with Rashaad’s win. Both of his aliens were painted beautifully - I loved the color combo on the male. Second, for me, was Tyler. I liked the faces, but wasn’t thrilled with the torso on the male as much as the judges were. And George. Poor George. Both were painted to be slightly melted chocolate bars.
I’m assuming that the judges flipped a coin between Tyler and Rashaad. As far as I was concerned, all the contestants went with the generic bumpy cowled aliens – even though they were well done bumpy cowled aliens.
I think George did lose based on his color scheme, which was a bit of a shame, but did he learn nothing from his vampire?
Did we already essentially see this finale before? I think it was dueling elves or something, but it was essentially the same thing.
I’m kind of “meh” over this season. There were some good designs, but the top talent didn’t seem quite as epic as previous seasons.
Yes, this. Argh. I had a hard time letting go of how stupid this was (even though, as you point out, it didn’t really impact the design overly much).
And I was also a little “huh?” on the fact that the aliens are dueling … in the the form of a dance-off with a random DJ. It was striking to me how this seemed so cobbled together, in contrast to last season where it was a ballet design, worn by ballet dancers dancing in a ballet.
ANYWAY, those are all complaints with the show.
In this finale, I truly felt that all three designs were very decent and mostly on par with one another. I have loved Rashaad’s work since the beginning, and was glad to see him win. I feel a bit the same way about Tyler … and if he had won, I wouldn’t be complaining either.
I agreed with the judges’ assessment that George’s work was a bit too monochromatic, and could kind of see the criticism that the two aliens were too similar when they are supposed to be different species, although that was a little hard to swallow when the challenge itself didn’t make any sense. Maybe one was a colony of the other that evolved into a different species. I’m curious as to what the judges would have made of that backstory (although it is a bit similar to George’s vampires evolving into werewolves, but the judges seemed to like THAT well enough). But regardless of these quibbles, I felt he was the clear third to Rashaad and Tyler, who I viewed as neck and neck.
The whole “this season is going to be bigger than ever!” was lame. If anything it seems smaller than in previous years. Other years the finale has been with Cirque du soleil or a water performance, but this year it was just dancing in a small club.
I think Tyler should have won, but I was OK with Rashaad. But this whole season has been more ‘meh’ than previous ones.
Personally I liked Tyler’s the tiniest bit more than Rashaad’s, but no complaints really. I liked George’s as well, but as others have said it was too one note between the two of them. They simply did not look like different species. Not the greatest season, but I still enjoyed it.
I agree, this season did not live up to the “bigger and better” hype. And, while the finale had some good designs, the last few shows just haven’t lived up to work from previous seasons. I’m thinking of the paint jobs by Laura and Anthony and the sculpting of Rayce and RJ.
Yeah, overall it seems like many of the sculpts were extremely similar regardless of the challenge… pointy ears, bumpy cowl, etc. There wasn’t a ton of really compelling, visionary stuff.
