> I assume for the same reason that someone would call French toast French toast. It sounds exotic.

It’s the egg batter. There’s a dish called Chicken French (or Chicken Francese) where you dip a chicken cutlet in egg batter and fry it. Or French ice cream, which is made with eggs. Basically when you hear a meal with the word French it means eggs were added.

Or it was cut up into long thin strips.

> One pound is barely anything in the column of butter that the bucket would need. A [quick search](http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061001152641AAavFMx) indicates that a pound of butter is about two cups. I think the butter dip cans are at least half a gallon and is probably more than twice that size.

Sigh… this was after they had been open for about 6 hours… this was just “topping it off.”

Not sure why you are certain that local business people are bent on ripping their friends off. They aren’t carnies.

Edit to ad… I’m not saying they used 2 cups of butter in 6 hours… I’m sure they drop a pound or so in every 30 to 60 minutes.

My most recent fair going experience was the New York State Fair last summer. At various points I had a sausage sandwich, fried ravioli, and a lobster roll.

At the Alameda County Fair last week I was commenting that it must be a sign that I’ve grown up. When I was a kid I wanted to eat everything at the fair, now I can hardly find anything I’d be willing to eat. Finally settled on a turkey leg, which was suprisingly edible, but mostly just because I felt like I should eat something after going all the way out there.

But I do miss living in a part of the country where I can get an elephant ear (grew up going to the Clark County (Washington) Fair. Funnel cake don’t cut it (and the occasional option of Indian fry bread ain’t quite right).

I can’t say that your folks weren’t using straight butter, rather that most don’t and enjoying the broad terms of the Pro-tip user agreement, these butter buckets are often butter floating on hot water. The end result is probably pretty much the same.

The water would probably help keep the butter from burning from hours over the heat.

Nothing better than fresh squeezed lemonade after a long hot day at the fair.

Except it’s totally, totally expensive and it’s mostly ice. But man, that half a cup of fresh-squeezed lemonade can’t be beat!!

For me, a corn dog is mandatory. Then I’ll have something sweet like a funnel cake or cotton candy or a deep-fried XYZ.
