Networks, by the original definition, meant a series of broadcast TV stations which were all affiliated and shared programming. Using that definition, in the US the best known true networks are NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox. Cable TV makes the concept of a “network” largely obsolete. Though, in common usage a cable station (or channel) can be a synonym of network, even if it’s not precisely correct. In mordern parlayance the distinction is merely semantics, though in fairness “the networks” has come to mean the original 4 mentioned above and the WB/UPN while every other channel is collectively called “cable”.
