If anyone ever asks why Enrico Fermi was working on the Manhattan Project in the United States rather than, y’know, plugging away at atom-splitting research in Fascist Italy, you may well answer that his homeland wasn’t exactly a welcoming place for Jews under Mussolini. If you’re then asked whether you’re saying that Enrico Fermi was Jewish, you can explain that, no, he wasn’t, but his _wife_ — Laura **Capon** Fermi — was. ---
