As a teen, Virginia “Ginny” Thrasher won a gold medal for the United States at the 2016 Olympics — which maybe wouldn’t be especially memorable, except that she won the _first_ gold medal there. Which means that, for a good long stretch right at the outset, the wall-to-wall coverage for Americans glued to their TVs had _no other champions to showcase_: just the girl who just outshot the Chinese silver medalist and the Chinese bronze medalist… ---
