Fargo S3

I thought that too, as if the moment her captainship was taken away from her, it’s as if she no longer exists.

I think you broke the code! Her whole identity may be based on being captain.

Chief.

D’oh! You’re right! My bad.:smack:

Hey, I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to find out if her police rank WAS ‘captain’—doesn’t look that way, but it might have been the case. So you are not really bad; certainly I’m no expert on police ranks. Looks as though a captain could be the head of a police station and might get called ‘chief’, though of course that’s not the same thing as Chief of Police. All rather confusing to us civilians.

Another Minnesota nitpick - police departments are run by cities, sheriff departments are run by the county. They’d cooperate with each other, but mostly stick to the urban/rural split. The position of Sheriff is an elected office; the police chief is appointed, usually by the mayor.

There are lots of smaller cities without a police department, which rely on a sheriff and deputies for law enforcement, but St. Cloud and Eden Valley both have a police department. No way would a sheriff have any authority to take over a police department without the city council being involved; see Forest Lake Police Disbanding for some recent Minnesota politics on separation between the two departments.

Great episode, and I think it really developed the season. I like how each season has similarities but splits off in different ways and with different overarching themes, with this season having Varga and income inequality being the villains.

I think it’s just a more showy thing about her being out of touch with technology. She’s said she’s not on Facebook and I think she said something about not liking computers.

I think the more likely explanation is the simpler one, that Thaddeus Mobley is Ennis Stussy as indicated on the show. It makes sense that the shy nerd who got in over his head in Hollywood and thought he killed a guy would change his name and lay low in Minnesota.

If anything I think it’s just showing the contrast between Mobley/Stussy and Varga. Mobley was so overwhelmed when he just thought he killed a guy that he got sick, compared to Varga who is seemingly unbothered by violence (although we haven’t seen him commit any that I remember) but he’ll purposely make himself sick after overindulging. The movie and each season have relatively normal people who get wrapped up in forces bigger than themselves, and the Stussys, the brothers and Mobley/Stussy, are those this season.

I think Gloria’s invisibility to technology is going to come into play with Mr. Varga, who likes using tech to find things out. He’s not going to see her coming.

True. She apparently has no online presence. The doors, faucets, etc, not working for her are maybe symbolic of that.

Ooo, I like that! Makes sense. Sometimes Old School is best.

No School like Old School!

Anybody else notice that the name on the cremation bag in the bank box was Luverne? An easter egg from season two?

I didn’t notice that, but I did think it unusual that the sole contents of his safe deposit box were his dog’s cremains.

I would be surprised if it does. I think it’s just quirky texture.

I loved the Billy Bob narration, although it kind of overshadows Varga in a way. Malvo was so great.

“Have a drink.”

Yuck

That was a rough episode (coffee mug and all). Thought for sure we’d lost an interesting character.

I want to smack Gloria’s new boss.

Why didn’t Emmit tell the IRS agent that it was his brother who took out the $10,000, without his knowledge?

Varga’s response to problem was pure evil - asking if the IRS agent has children.

Speaking of Varga; I think the writers are deliberately subverting the trope of the suave sophisticated foreign accented evil mastermind.

Not only are his motives evil, his manners, his appearance, even his personal habits, are disgusting.

To me, it seemed that Varga’s bulimia was symbolic - he is a man with a huge appetite, but once he’s full he just vomits it all up and eats some more. It wasn’t about real nourishment, but merely satisfying his craving. That’s what he’s doing to Stussy and Co.

And I thought it was a bit out of character to just have the girl beaten. Varga is a guy who murders people who simply look him up on the internet. That girl is a major complication, and is responsible for bringing the IRS into the situation. He should have casually squashed her like a bug. What I expected to happen is that the thugs were going to kill Sy and the girl, or kill the girl in front of Sy to keep him in line.

I don’t think they expected her to live thru that.

THat was brutal.
