What about if if the tip comes to $.999… would paying them a dollar be too much?

I consider myself a relatively hardcore liberal in most significant ways, as well as someone who finds hatred directed at anyone for their appearance to be pathetic and cruel…and I think “Hate Crime” as a legal concept is garbage out the gate, because it’s a thought crime, and my understanding of the ideals in our bill of rights and constitution makes thought crime an anathema.

It’s an example of liberals being hypocrites and it drives me nuts.

I think maybe you should take a deep breath and find some rational thought. My confusion comes from why you are addressing ME with issues that I didn’t bring up at all or respond to? Because I am posting in this thread I should have to answer to everything everyone else has said that you don’t like or agree with? That is crazy behavior if that’s what you’re doing. If it isn’t what you’re doing, perhaps you can explain to me why you’re asking me about things that I didn’t bring up at all.

> America is the leader in overweight and obesity for G7 countries. Canadians or 16% less over weight or obese than Americans. The really interesting question is why? You can keep waiving your personal responsibility bludgeon around, but clearly there’s a bigger issue here. Does writing everything in two languages really burn that many calories?

What, what? Firstly, I don’t really care about the update with your school and studies but I suppose for some reason you find that to be pertinent to the conversation, or am I just supposed to be impressed that you’re in school? Strange, indeed.

Now, am I to understand that because you are providing cites that Canada is less obese than the US you think this “proves” that it is EASIER for Canadians than Americans somehow? In post #378 I said I do not believe it is EASIER and you think your cites prove me wrong? Wow. How, exactly, do you think you can prove that it is easier? Don’t try to prove to me things that I never said. If you want to play “I’m right and you’re wrong!” you should stick to the words that I am actually typing and not what you THINK is there, or what someone else has said (see my first point).

> [@The\_Tao\_s\_Revenge](#):
>
> I meant the generic you btw, but interesting to see I struck a nerve. Why was your perception that I was calling you fat so offensive to you?

Striking a nerve? Dude, I’m just trying to figure out what realm of reality you’re typing in that would make you type the responses you typed to me in the first post where you addressed me. You come in guns blazing to “prove” to me things that I didn’t say nor agree with and then you talk to me about losing weight and improving my life? It seemed like one more thing that pointed to you either being drunk or just responding to the wrong person.

> [@The\_Tao\_s\_Revenge](#):
>
> Ahh so if you don’t mention it, it don’t exist. Ego much? The fat divide at the US-Canadian border is very real.

More “WTF?” as far as I’m concerned. Lots of things exist that I didn’t mention and that has nothing to do with my ego. YOUR EGO has brought you in here railing about ideas that I hadn’t addressed at all. Whatever has you so wound up that you’re incapable of rational thought, I hope you get that worked out.

> [@The\_Tao\_s\_Revenge](#):
>
> You’re posting in a troll thread to ask me why I’m posting in a troll thread? Irony much? I’m personally posting to fight some ignorance.

I posted to ask you why you are asking ME about things that the TROLL has said. Let’s try to do this slowly: I.have.no.idea.why.the.OP.feels.the.way.they.do. I cannot help you with that. If you feel like “fighting ignorance” (oh brother) then maybe you should do that with the people who HOLD THE BELIEFS YOU ARE TRYING TO DISPROVE and not just anyone who is in the thread in your line of fire.

Seriously, don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back because your frothing responses to me have nothing to do with the information I have discussed here. What a good boy you are to provide cites about the bad ol OP and his beliefs, but I don’t care because I never believed his views to begin with.

Now, deep breaths and visualize a peaceful meadow where you can relax. Reeeelaaaaax.

Well what’s the alternative? What do you think accounts for the difference? If it’s “personal responsibility”, then you’re still left explaining why Americans, en mass, fail so hard at it. You can’t just ignore contradictory evidence because you didn’t bring it up. There’s something about Canada that makes people less likely to have weight problems.

Exactly. We have a neighbor to the north that’s providing us a good example. We owe it to ourselves, and those who come after us to learn ever lesson we can from their example, and that of other countries, as well as what we know of ourselves. The better we understand what works and what doesn’t the better we can do.

Personally the first place I’d check is the ingredients label. Like what’s allowed or accepted in the food, and what’s not.

O little fella, you were freaked out before I even got here. Trust. You’re the one who started our little conversation here with nonsense and lunatic ravings about things I hadn’t even addressed. Do you walk up to people in public and start in on them about your home life or other things they haven’t brought up to you? Also, I have to question your judgment if you think that you’re capable (especially with your crazy person, off point rantings) of making me angry. Hornets nest? I hope you have people around you to help you if you ever really do have someone angry if you think this is a “hornet’s nest” because my post is really just about trying to figure out what lit your fuse and made you think that I should answer to you about things the OP has stated.

Now for your question that you (for some odd reason) think that _I_ am the person in this thread to answer for you, let’s look at that. What’s you’re saying (I think?) is that it is EASIER for Canadians to lose weight than people in the United States simply because the US has a higher rate of obesity.

Let’s look at that. Do they have little Maple Leaf Fairies that sprinkle diet flakes into their breakfasts each morning? Do they have super secret information from the Canadian government that will immediately burst into flames if an American reads it? Maybe they have special Canadian foodstuffs made from Canadian sunshine and love that are lower in calories and fat yet higher in protein?

We’re not living in two completely different types of worlds. What information (in your wise estimation) only exists north of the border that we don’t have in the United States that makes it EASIER for Canadians?

What could account for it in the real world and not Tao’s special, special world? There could be a lot of things that could contribute. Are there more working mothers in the US than Canada? Studies have shown that when both parents work the household is more likely to consume processed foods which are higher in fat and calories. Are there more fast food restaurants in American cities? I could sit here and speculate all night about the what ifs, but this is _ **your** _ argument not mine, so if you think I’m going to research it for you, you’re mistaken. It is _you_ that is saying it is easier for Canadians, so you should be the one to tell us why. I didn’t respond to you spouting nonsense about points you never tried to make about topics you never mentioned. That’s your deal, sporto.

My husband and I visit the US almost every year for a week or two, and I’ve been pondering your question, **The Tao’s Revenge** (we live in Calgary). We’ve been quite a few different places in the US, and we’ve noticed that portion sizes and drink sizes at restaurants are much larger in some places, and a little bit bigger overall. I think the biggest difference that we notice just as visitors is the advertising - it is relentless and everywhere in the US, encouraging people to eat, eat, eat (also to buy, buy, buy, but that’s part of a different discussion). Also, there are tvs on everywhere - I don’t know if that affects obesity.

This may be the short answer; Americans seem to be eating more. [How much Canadians eat, according to Stats Canada as of 2008](http://www.statcan.gc.ca/ads-annonces/23f0001x/hl-fs-eng.htm):

> [@](#):

> The total daily intake of calories per person fell to 2,382 calories

According to [this site,](http://4pack.wordpress.com/2009/05/14/ideal-diet-average-american-adult-consumes-2775-calories-per-day-and-the-misreading-of-serving-size-may-be-part-of-the-problem/) the average American eats:

> [@](#):
>
> The average adult consumes 2,775 calories per day, according to the most recent USDA statistics

I guess the real question is why. [The second graph on this page is startling -](http://www.ethicurean.com/2008/08/10/usda-calorie-data/) look at the jump of added fats in foods from 2000 to present. Cereals and flours have gone up significantly, too (protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables have remained virtually stable). Interesting.

Another lurker here.

I have to disagree. Post 411 is a exercise in ranting. Tao provides actual facts and figures. Butterflies provides sarcasm and condescension.
