Remember that TV show I was on about a month ago? Well, this morning I got a call from AMC—they wanted me to come right over to their studios and audition for a position as an on-air host!!! So I spent my lunch hour chatting happily about movies into the camera (thank GOODNESS I happened to have a nice outfit and a lot of makeup on today!). I mustn’t get my hopes up, they’re seeing a LOT of people I (Greg Brady was right behind me in line!). I’m sure this will just be another instance of Fate yanking the carrot away at the last minute, laughing maniacally. But golly—I have WAY too much going on in my life right now—will you excuse me? I think I have to lie down for a few moments . . . ---

I’m sure if I get this job I’ll wind up like Patty Duke in “Valley of the Dolls”—God? It’s me, Neely . . . Seriously, I really doubt I have any chance at getting this (I keep telling myself, to keep my hopes realistically dampened). It does sound like the perfect dream job for me—should I have told them that I will, indeed, put out for it? “Zippers down, boys, Eve’s auditioning!” Plus, my book got RAVE advance reviews in Publisher’s Weekly (“extravagantly entertaining and vivid”) and Booklist “sprightly”)! This is NOT turning out to be a bad week for me (she says, walking blithly toward the open manhole). ---

Sadly, I don’t get AMC–or perhaps I should rephrase that as my local cable company doesn’t carry AMC. Nonetheless, they could do no better in their quest for a motion picture maven. But wouldn’t you miss the buzz of a smoke-filled copyroom, the smell of printer’s ink on the devils (or devil’s ink on the printers), the editor (complete with green eyeshade and sleeve garters) bursting out of the inner sanctum with a cry of “stop the presses! Hold the front page!”, or “put a screamer on that!”? Never mind the coffe mugs, how about using your influence to hold a Tony Hancock movie festival? _The Wrong Box, The Punch and Judy Man_ and my favourite, _The Rebel_.
