My wife and i watched _Young Frankenstein_ again last week, and while i love it and think it’s a very funny movie with some very smart nods to the genre, it doesn’t make me laugh the way that _Blazing Saddles_ does. ---

This summer, my wife and I saw a Broadway touring company in Young Frankenstein: The Musical. It was even funner that the movie. ---

I saw _Blazing Saddles_ in a theater when it was new; I’m afraid I wasn’t very impressed at the time. I thought the funniest line was “Schvartzers!” Finally got around to watching it again a few years ago and thought it was great. Maybe I immatured over time. 🆒 I think _Young Frankenstein_ is Brooks’s masterpiece, though. That one’s just a notch below _A Funny Thing Happened_. ---

I was about to post with my own little attempt, and ask a question of others, but yours is exactly the way I heard it. Thing about Yiddish – it doesn’t exactly take well to German spelling or syntax, always, so a German speaker/writer would write it differently, but to Yiddish speaker, it’s just kind of what it sounds like, is my experience. I don’t remember the first bit about “zeit nicht meshuggeh” – I thought it was “sei nicht meshuggah” – as in “be not crazy.” Never heard the “cop a walk” – always thought it was “take” not “cop,” but I didn’t grow up with mamaloshen. ---

(shrug) I was raised Catholic and use the German spelling because it’s what I know, but I have claimed many times on this board that, when I was young, Yiddish was America’s second language. And “sei nicht meshuggeh” might be closer. ---

Yes, _THE_ Richard Pryor was one of the writers. I always imagined he hand crafted each and every N-word in the script, like the master artisan he was. Mel Brooks said recently that Pryor scripted Mongo. Interesting! ---
