Favorite Cartoon Voices

June Foray is sometimes referred to as ‘the female Mel Blanc’. I’ve often heard the reply that ‘no, Mel, was the male June Foray’. (edited to add - according to wiki, this quote has been attributed originally to animation director Chuck Jones) June is STILL actively working - at the age of 96!

Listening to Rob Paulsen’s podcast (ANOTHER great voice actor - Yakko, Pinky, Carl Weezer, TWO of the Ninja Turtles [Raphael in the 80’s version, Donatello now] and many others ), it was brought up that some of Mel’s voices were actually created by slowing down or speeding up the tape - he could do them for quick bursts as actual voices, but they normally did the tape trick. No idea if that’s true/verified.

Interestingly enough, watchmojo.com has a list of the Top Ten Cartoon Voice Actors. Here’s their list, from 10-1:

  1. Kevin Conroy, who has voiced Batman for the last 20+ years
  2. Hank Azaria, who does at least 35 different voices on “The Simpsons”
  3. Billy West, voice of Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Zoidberg, Stimpy, Zapp Brannigan, and filled-in for Bugs and Elmer
  4. Rob Paulsen, voice of Raphael from the original TMNT, Donatello in the CG movie (and later series), Yakko Warner, Pinkie from “Pinkie and the Brain,” ZeFronk, Mark Chang from “Fairly Oddparents”
  5. Peter Cullen, Optimus Prime and Eeyore
  6. Tress MacNeille, Dot Warner, Agnes Skinner, Mom from “Futurama,” Daisy Duck, Chip
  7. Jim Cummings, Darkwing Duck, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Hondo Ohnaka
  8. Tara Strong, Hello Kitty, Bubbles, Harley Quinn, Jimmy from “Fairly Oddparents,” Ben from “Ben 10,” Twilight Sparkles
  9. Mel Blanc

and, as #1 (which surprised me that it wasn’t Blanc),

  1. Frank Welker, who voices Slimer, Abu, Scooby, Fred Jones, Dr Claw, Megatron, Curious George, Nibbler, Garfield (2008-2013), Azrael the Cat. Among many others

Frank Welker as Galvatron.
Lorenzo Music as Peter Venkman from the Real Ghostbusters.
Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
Tom Kenny as Starscream, Spongebob
EG Daily as Tommy from Rugrats
and the best Joker voice ever Mark Hamill

Chef. Marvin the Martian.

Dan Castellaneta, not as Homer Simpson, but as The Robot Devil, is definitely one of my favorite cartoon voices. Almost all the Futurama voices are fantastic.

Mark Hamill as the Joker in Batman TAS was fantastic. All the voice acting in that show was top notch.

Big fan of the Adventure Time voices you mentioned, especially Ice King. It’s a really great voice. The Regular Show voices are all pretty good too.

Chowder, voiced by 11-yr old Nicky Jones. The use of a kid for the character (himself a kid) worked so well.
