**Can I use Asterix names?** The names are mostly puns and the translators are brilliant. Examples; Cacofonix, the bard : is tied hand and foot and gagged whenever there is the slightest chance of him breaking into song. Unhygienix, the fishmonger, whose produce has a unique “nose” Bacteria, his wife. Vitalstatistix, the chief: a man of imposing bulk Impedimenta, his wife Justforkix: teenage rebel Sendervictorius Appianglorius: Roman guards at the Tower of London Dubbelosix: Roman spy (modelled on Sean Connery) Flaturtha the Numidian, a pirate Edifis: Egyptian architect of crooked buildings Artifis: Crooked Egyptian architect of buildings ---

Not quite characters in the sense of the OP, but the names the ships chose for themselves in Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels are pretty cool. They would pick names for themselves that reflected both their personality as well as their purpose. Favorite from the series is the ROU(rapid offensive unit) Frank Exchange of Views. Delightful! About 1987, _Spy_ magazine ran a piece on what I can only call guerrilla junk mail. It involved signing up for mailing lists under outlandishly absurd names: Oovus Oozfuz Prof. Drano Lummox Bunni D’Hottub (job title: Producer’s Girlfriend) Whip Blah, Jr. (of the National Endowment for the Inhumanities) Guy Inagorillasuit and my personal favorite, Rasputin Pianothrower One purpose of the piece was to see how rapidly the names propagated through marketers buying or sharing each other’s lists. And they did propagate rapidly, absurd though they were. “Dear Mr. Inagorillasuit…” ---
