My favorite is probably “The King of Comedy.” “Heat” and “Midnight Run” are also high on my list. ---

[_Once Upon a Time in America_](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087843/) One of my favorite flicks of all time (Director’s Cut, obviously, and not the travesty that was original released by butchers). He was a younger man at the time (as was James Woods), but as their characters aged they effortlessly portrayed the weariness of middle age.\* A _tour de force_ for both of them. \*I remember being equally impressed with the young Jeremy Irons in _Brideshead Revisited_, portraying a character from a callow youth to an older and disillusioned man reflecting on his past. ---

_Brazil_, while not technically a DeNiro flick, is greatly enhanced by his role as the plumber. ---

_Raging Bull_ is inarguably DeNiro’s most challenging dramatic role. Everyone focuses on the weight gain, but what is really phenomenal is how DeNiro embodies the hulking, atavistic, juvenile monster that is Jake LaMotta. DeNiro as a surprisingly nuanced performance in _Heat_ (especially compared to Pacino), but while it isn’t his most extensive performance I like the way he articulated Mamet’s dialogue in _Ronin_: “I once removed a guy’s appendix with a grapefruit spoon.” Stranger ---
