Metroid
Castlevania
Sonic
Mega Man
Final Fantasy
Mortal Kombat

Monkey Island 2 took everything about 1 and expanded, while at the same time upping the humor quotient and not repeating anything. 3 and 4 weren’t anywhere near as good, mostly because the lead designer (Ron Gilbert) left between games.

GTA: San Andreas is just so BIG that I prefer it over GTA 1,2,3, and Vice City almost by default. Even non-gaming cynics are impressed when my character runs out of his house, jumps on a bike, upgrades to a car, rides to the airport, steals a plane, and flies from LA to San Fransisco, all in real time 3D. It’s like the culmination of every flying game where I wished I could land and get out, and every FPS where I wished I could jump in the cars that were sitting there.

Super Mario Brothers - Close tie between Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island
Legend of Zelda - Link to the Past, definitely.
Metroid - Super Metroid, with an honorary mention to the GB version for the introduction of the Spider Ball
Mega Man - Megaman X1, honorary mention to Megaman X4.
Final Fantasy - FF6, FFTactics

San Andreas is extremely impressive as far as the scope of where you can go and what you can do. That said, the atmosphere of GTA3 was more to my liking, and I finished GTA3 so it gets my vote. 🙂

I’ll only list here here right now.

Civilization: Civ 2. THough Civ 4 might eventually dethrone it, Civ 2 had a lot to reccomend it. It expanded the basics of Civ 1 into a massively better game, with more units, tech, and strategies. It was not quite so easy to dominate, and the AI worked pretty well. At the same time, it upgraded combat immensely.

Unlike Civ 3 later on, it wasn’t freaking annoying.
FInal Fantasy: FF9.

Yes, you heard me, Nine. I have no idea why so many people like 7 or 8 or 10. They’re not bad, per se, and they have good points (10 is definitely up there with the best FF’s). But, at the same time, they’re childish. Characterization is either lacking or very spotty. The plots are relatively thin, and the games lack the feel of Final Fantasy. FF 10 in particular feels cramped, with no world map to explore. All are clogged with stupid minigames. Seven, stripped of the fact that it had rpetty good graphics when it came out, gets much less interesting the more you play.

Nine doesn’t do that. It does drop off a little bit, which is sad, but it holds my interest as much or more than other other FF. I love 4 and 6, but on any given day I’d rather pull and play 9. Disc 1 is a masterpeice, and the game’s only real problem is the endemic slowing of the plot common to most FF’s. The other issue is that the player feels like he’s pushing against the wind, since as in all FF’s, you don’t really accomplish a thing until the game’s very end. For some weird reason, in all FF’s, nothing you do apart from killing the last boss matters to the plot.

Besides, that, however, 9 has some great characters. Zidane is brave and decisive (Squall suck!). You can that see his womanizing is, at heart, amusingly inept. Steiner may not be Auron, but he’s fun and appropriately uptight. Garnet/Dagger is a great character: brave but somewhat confused and unsure. Vivi is wonderful, as the struggles to come to grips with his own mortality. Eiko is a charming little scamp in anyone’s book. Freya and Amarant, sadly, don’t get much characterization later on, but they they do get is good. There’s a feeling that these characters are, while archetypes, real and fun.

I will never forget some of the FMV’s in this game. I really want to visit Lindblum, see Burmecia in its soggy glory, take a soaring airship across the sea. This game’s FMV’s make the summoned monsters feel like something more than spells. I can’t say that for any other FF.

I love the skill system. It’s the most flexible than any other FF. Sure, you may not be able to change classes, but there are abilities here which you can actually use strategically. Poison monsters? get immunity. High defense monsters? Use MP Attack. Do they like to use magic? Pop in Vivi and Amarant and have them toss it right back. And many monsters have some weaknesses or speial tricks you can use to take them down. This opens up a lot of replay possibilities. Plus, leveling up is fairly quick; you can just play through, or beef up your party for extra firepower. Not every stage is easy, either. This game can put the smack on you even if you level up a little. And the weapons and armors have all kinds of neat properties; even FF9 didn’t use that a early and as constantly.

Agreed. Best in the series by far and an incredible game in general.

Legend of Zelda-Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past. I’ll admit it. I choked on this one. Ocarina of Time is a great game, but Link to the Past was nearly as good with on a lesser console.

Super Mario 3: Teddy Bear suit. That kicks ass. 😃

Final Fantasy VII: This was a tough call. X is a great game with good play, good story, and much better graphics. I guess I just enjoyed VII more.

Castevania II: One of my first console games. Nostalgia counts for a lot with me.

**Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past** (I’ve only played the first 3).

\*\*Super Metriod. \*\*

Never played much **Castlevania, Sonic, Mega man, Dragon Quest or Mortal Kombat.**

**Final Fantasy 5** , followed by 7 and 4.(I haven’t played anything more recent then 7).

**Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2.** Yeah, you heard me. It just seemed a lot more fun then the others.

Does\*\* Alpha Centari \*\* count as a Civ game? Because if it does I’m picking it.

Super Mario Brothers - SMB3, for the sheer variety of levels. The giant world was my favorite.
Legend of Zelda - A tough choice between LttP and OoT, but I need to hand it to Ocarina, if only because it’s an origin story.
Metroid - Super Metroid
Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
Sonic - I only ever played the first one for more than five minutes, so I can’t make a decision.
Mega Man - Mega Man 3.
Final Fantasy - 6
Mortal Kombat - 2
Dragon Quest - I only finished the first one, so I’ll go with that. “And the world fell into darkness…” Heh heh.
Command and Conquer - I don’t think Renegade counts. Red Alert 1.
GTA - 3, because it was such a huge step up from the previous titles. VC and SA are almost identical to 3 with some graphics changes.
Monkey Island - 3, for giving us MURRAY! and the Pirate Song.
Ogre Battle - The version on the N64. Squad-based strategy without getting bogged down with individual tactics with a huge variety of classes.

I agree !

Castlevania : Symphony of the Night
I’m torn between FF VII and FF X.
Masters of Orion 2 of course.
Baldur’s Gate 2 : Throne of Bhaal
Deception 2
Civilization 3 ( but haven’t played 4 yet ).
Ogre Battle Tactics
Wing Commander III

King’s Quest - Some say IV is the best, and it certainly was the peak of the franchise, but I found it long and too tough. I’d have to vote for I. A classic and genre-creating game, well designed and well-implemented.

Space Quest - II most definitely, though I was also great. III was kinda blah.

Oooooooh. **King’s Quest**. I’m really partial to **II** , since it’s the first computer game I ever owned. But, even though other people really _hated_ it - my pick is **KQ III**. Why? Gwydion! Magic! The Wizard Manannan! Dragons! Pirates! Spellbooks! “Pick up \_\_\_\_\_!” “Look at \_\_\_\_\_!” Daventry! Bandits! Poisoned Cookies! Save/Restore! Save/Restore! Save/Restore! Save/Restore! Actually, I really liked three, but never finished it. I can’t remember why exactly… there was a desert bit that I couldn’t get through.

Two was a ton of fun. I almost said that was my favorite. It had the nursery-rhyme allusions that IV did, but was a lot more playable.
