To clarify, those are reprints of All-Star Comics from the ‘70s, not Roy Thomas’ All-Star Squadron series from the '80s.
Plastic Man and Blackhawk are big favorites of mine.
Madam Fatal was a bit ahead of its time.
I’d love to see reprints of Gary Concorde, the Ultra-Man.
The worst was one called “The Eye,” a huge disembodied eye that floated around smiting evildoers. “Injury to eye motif” indeed!
The Captain Marvel movies I bought have him chasing the bad guys onto the roof of a building, picking up a big V8 engine block and throwing it at a bad guy, hitting him in the back of the head, knocking him off the roof. It was never explained why they had the garage on the roof of the building.
Hmm…does this include the version of Batman who killed people, occasionally?
And—wikipedia tells me that The Shadow had some comic spinoffs in this time frame. That outta count for something.
The Spirit!!!
Yes and no. Iron Munro and the rest of the “Young All-Stars” (except Dan the Dyna-Mite) were meant to be analogues for the Golden Age heroes erased from existence by the Crisis. Iron Munro’s backstory, however, was tied into “Gladiator.”
Yeah, dammit, Bosda nearly gave me a heart attack when he said All-Star Squadron was hitting TPB.
Don’t tease a guy like that!
'Course, I’m about four issues short of the complete run of the series anyway…
Superman, Green Lantern, Flash and Johnny Thunder. I always liked that guy.
And my favorite Golden Age parody, “The Green Lampshade, star of All Ukrainian Comics,” from E-Man.
No love for the Spectre? He’s my favorite. Such a bizarre concept for a character!
Excellent choice.
Excelt for Dan the Dyna-Mite and Sandy the Golden Boy, that is. Of course, Sandy didn’t figure prominently in those stories, and he was basically dropped after the first few issues.
And the early art reminds me of Ditko.
I wonder if it was an influence?
Gotta put in a plug for Wonder Woman, in all her original thinly-veiled B&D, S&M kinky, ever-so-slightly-Sapphic, mistress & slave-lovin’ glory!
Lot’s of great choices listed here but for me the top is split between Captain Marvel and The Spirit.
Yeah, Golden Age Wonder Woman is the very bestest Wonder Woman of them all!
I like the Golden Age versions of Green Lantern and Hawkman much better than later incarnations.
I like the original Human Torch much better than Johnny Storm.
As an aside, did anyone ever read the DC miniseries (and graphic novel collection) “Golden Age?” All in all, one of my favorite comic books ever.
The Golden Age by James Robinson? It’s excellent, and was a non-continuity precursor to his Starman series, aka the bestest comic ever.
