The opening of Ghost Dog - The Way Of The Samurai (Samurai Showdown) is one of those things that becomes an earworm if you let it. Love this movie!
The opening theme, “Dawn,” from the 2005 remake of Pride and Prejudice. Simple, classic beauty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JabYvSUDF8
“Arrival at Netherfield,” also from P&P, which captures the excitement of the big party for which the characters arriving: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q779-RQowC0
The Klingon warships’ approach in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which has a great Mongol Horde sound to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwLrEcwtFM4&feature=related
Alan Silvestri’s haunting main theme from Cast Away:
Annie Lennox sings the wonderfully evocative “Into the West,” which she cowrote, from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, at the Oscars:
Can’t find the original of Enya singing “May It Be” from The Fellowship of the Ring online, I assume due to copyright. But it’s one of my favorites.
Here’s a classic: “Un homme et une femme”(“A Man and a Woman”) from 1966.
The theme music for The Godfather is so well known that I won’t post it, but there is a selection for Tom Hagen’s visit to Hollywood (Manhattan Serenade - The godfather – continued here) for which I wanted to include another version, more extended, Manhattan Serenade, in case anybody else finds it as memorable as I do.
Similarly, I never cared all that much for Raindrops Keep Falling On my Head, but I would have preferred the music behind this montage for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to have been used throughout the movie. Here’s another version of SOUTH AMERICAN GETAWAY - The Swingtones. They mean well. ![]()
Labdad, I’ve let your selection lead me on a little trip of “this reminds me of” that went in five steps from this theme to Andy Williams. See if the steps are logical. If so, why not try a similar approach from other music in the thread.
The thread’s been inactive for a couple of days, so what can it hurt?
Step 1: another portion of Un Homme Et Une Femme - Deauville leads to
Step 2: still another place in Un homme et Une Femme (1966) - Samba Saravah (music starts at 1:00) which reminded me of
Step 3: a similar tribute of sorts: Influencia do Jazz - Carlos Lyra - Bossa Nova which reminded me of
Step 4: another Bossa Nova: Marcos Valle - Samba de Verão and that led me to
Step 5: one of those songs (by Marcos Valle) that I had to search all over the web (a few months ago) to learn the name of: The Face I Love
Children of Men, both the songs and the Johen Tavener soundtrack (sorry, no link)
I can definitely see the progression. I could have sworn Andy Williams covered “A Man and a Woman” (the English lyrics, but I may be confusing the fact that his wife, Claudine Longet, did a French version of the song.
I’m having a terrible time trying to find exactly how high the song went on the charts in 1966, but it was a monster hit. I KNOW someone sang it - if it wasn’t Andy Williams, it was Jack Jones or Steve Lawrence or one of those guys.
And I can’t find out if the instrumental that was the big radio hit was performed by Francis Lai or someone else like Percy Faith.
I DO remember when I was 16 I had this album, and there’s a cover of “A Man and a Woman” on it, so it was already a hit.
“A Man and a Woman” was one of those movies that was supposed to be guaranteed to get you laid. Not that that did me any good when I was 15!
Labdad, there’s at least Days Of Wine And Roses/In The Arms Of Love Andy Williams (Vocals) with A Man and a Woman #23 among the tracks. Audio clip available.
Shaun of the Dead.
Also the movie whos name I cant remember but is the Pueblo word for Chaos I believe.
A great Art film that shows the patterns things like wheat fields, rock formations etc. make in ordinary life.
I’ve described it badly but its an incredible film with truly incredible music.
Koyaanisqatsi (1982) had music by Philip Glass. That the one?
The Truman Show’s music was good, also by Glass.
Haven’t seen Koyaanisqatsi.
Fan of Jon Brion lately:
I Heart Huckabees
Punch-Drunk Love
Eternal Sunshine
It dawned on me after the Philip Glass mention that he’s done other scores like Koyaanisqatsi (1982) in Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002), and perhaps ohers along similar lines. Those three I can vouch for as being special films.
Overused but I like the soundtrack, (which will be familiar to most people 1 minute in, and about 4:15 is most famiar part ), from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story - Soundtrack.
Yes, I think most of the score of **The Truman Show **was from Powaqqatsi. I think I’ve heard that being said before. It still fits very well. Glass even made a cameo in the movie. They also play the tunes on Dateline NBC, which bothers me, but what are you going to do?
(Just a sample, it’s the scene where right after Truman hears live feed on his car radio where an instructor’s narrating Truman’s progress to the extras ect).
The other **‘Anthem **songs’ are quite good too.
Neat site. New to me. Thanks for the link.
Dead Like Me had a unique little song that would show up at random times. They used it as the main theme in the DVD movie that just came out.
Yes it is,I’ve seen it several times a truly incredible film but I can never remember the name of it .
Cheers.
*End of My Journey by Harry Stewart from Cadence. Not usually one for church music, but damn, this one gets me.
*Fargo, ND by Carter Burwell from Fargo. Sometimes I used to put the DVD on just to fall asleep to the main menu.
**Llorando(Crying) by Rebecca Del Rio from Mulholland Dr.. Beautiful, but utterly heart-wrenching.
*Suzanne by Weezer from Mallrats. Good song by a good band from a great movie.
**Vertigogo by Combustible Edison from Four Rooms. If this is in the OP, I apologize; can’t check youtube here. The zaniness of the song really fits the movie.
Disclaimer: *I just pulled the link from yahoo, blindly. **Older link used from a past post.
I had to track this thread down because a current one made me think of it!
I just knew I had posted some of these tunes before.
