Favorite opening tracks from debut albums

“Purple Haze” wasn’t on the original British and European release of “Are You Experienced”, but only added to the later US release, alongside “Hey Joe” and “The Wind Cries Mary”. The first song of the original release was “Foxy Lady”, not a bad way to start either.

OK, ignoring EPs ( a fairly common start for most genres I like)…

A lot can change in 15 years. I’d personally be concerned if my tastes had been frozen for 15 years. I see I reposted half my list from then, today. That’s a good mix of old and new, I think.

I also see I made the same comment about EPs then, too

Round Here opens August and Everything After, the debut of Counting Crows. August is basically a perfect album for me and the way Round Here opens with Adam’s simple vocal is such a gorgeous introduction to the band.

“The Stumble” is the first track of Blues Helping, debut album of Love Sculpture - Wikipedia.

One of my favorite one hit wonders dates from 1969. I enjoy the song, but didn’t know which album it came from. And I don’t know any other songs from the group. It turns out it is the lead song on their debut album. I don’t think it’s been mentioned here yet. It’s an old song.

Year — 1969
Group — Zager and Evans (Denny Zager and Rick Evans)
Album — 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)
Song — In the Year 2525

So, not only is it a One Hit Wonder, it is also a Favorite Opening Track on their Debut Album.

My memory might be faulty, but was there a poster here who posted obsessively about this band and this song? But that might have been another message board. Either way, hadn’t thought of that in a long time.

My pick, from the Clash’s first album (UK version), is quite an opener:

The Clash - Janie Jones (Official Audio)

Wordy Rappinghood

Or alternatively, from Black Grape’s It’s Great When You’re Straight, Yeah!

Revered Black Grape

“Phasors On Stun” from FM’s debut album, Black Noise

“Ace of Wands”, from Steve Hackett’s first solo album.

Again, Alice in Chains had a few songs before their first full-length album, but there is something appropriate to hearing Layne for the first time(as many of us did) singing We Die Young in their first full album. It’s a good song, too.

Poor, Layne. I still miss him. My favorite vocalist, even better than Freddie Mercury(though We Die Young may actually not feature his voice at its best).

I think Hozier came strong out of the gate with “Take Me To Church,” the first track off his eponymous debut album (somehow that was a decade ago???). Maybe still what he’s known for; most of the way to a billion views on the music video.

I Just Want to Make Love to You off Foghat’s self-named debut album in 1972.

Our Lips are Sealed from the Go-Gos first album Beauty and the Beat from 1981.

Joan Jett gets three. The Runaways in 1975 had Cherry Bomb. Her first solo album in 1980 started off with Bad Reputation. Then in the following year she released the first album as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts which lead with I Love Rock 'n Roll.

Hero Takes a Fall was the first track of the Bangles debut album All Over the Place in 1984.

Well, all the obvious ones are already posted, but here is a pretty strong offering from a pretty strong album. They only made one, and I like it. Cheesy Cowboy Rock, it’s been called.

All Is Quiet on the Western Front

Keep Yourself Alive - Queen

“Too Sweet” may have surpassed it now. It was absolutely huge for him last summer; it hit #1 on the U.S. and UK charts (among a number of other countries), and was on a number of “best songs of 2024” lists.

I completely forgot this was their debut album. Good pick!

My first choices (Led Zeppelin, Stone Roses, Police) have been taken. So other ones:

Olivia Rodrgo - Brutal:

Bone Machine - Pixies

Adult Diversion - Alvvays

Heel/Heal - IDLES
