As for comedy and crime mixup I rather like Crime in Sports and Small Town Crimes done by the same guys. They are both crime focused so you don’t really need to like sports to like Crime in Sports and if you do it’s a fun look at what happened to players you may not have kept up with whose life is a mess. Fun stuff.
One I listen to that I haven’t seen mentioned is The Cracked Podcast. The episodes with Jason Pargin are best and it seems to have taken a step down in quality lately but the back catalog is worth a listen.
Crime In Sports is probably my favorite podcast right now, it’s a true crime podcasts where the hosts are actually funny because they’re experienced stand-up comedians instead of just being people who think they’re funny. “I’m good now!” and “Junior!” are my favorite recurring gags from the podcast.
I cannot believe that with all of these other fantastic podcasts that I second in most cases that no one has mentioned:
My Dad Wrote a Porno
It is the most consistently funny and entertaining thing to which I have listened (and probably even watched) in my life. The concept is that a British tradesman retired and wrote a series of erotica that his son discovered and then reads them with his friends to great embarrassment and amusement. His dad is a great sport about it and is a huge fan of the show making fun of him. Each episode is a chapter and they are just finishiing book 3 now. His dad’s understanding of business and anatomy and conversations and international travel and aristocracy and… lead to bizarre storylines. It is really in good fun as the friends even know the dad and vouch for the support the author has for the podcast.
Saying that it is graphic is not correct- amusing is far more accurate. I really cannot recommend it highly enough. Two suggestions - don’t binge it too hard. An episode plus the followup every week is ideal. And it takes the hosts a little while to identify that the embarrassment of the son is not the amusing part but halfway through book 1 it really hits its stride. The expert and actor interviews are just icing on the cake!
How is it you have come to arrive here?
That and I’m good now are my favorites.
If you like sports and science, StarTalk has a spin-off podcast called Playing With Science that is very interesting if you like sports and science.
Both Chuck Nice and Neil Tyson deGrassi have great radio voices, I think.
I’m about to unsubscribe from Cracked; the podcast just isn’t very good anymore. It sort of lost something when Jack O’Brien left. A shame, too, because I started listening to My Favorite Murder after Karen and Georgia were interviewed on Cracked.
Some additions
Answer Me This (surprised it’s not already on here. Very similar vibe to Cecil Adams)
The Naked Scientist Hosted from Cambridge.
Death Sex and Money
I agree with all of that, including being introduced to MFM because of their appearance on Cracked.
I listen to a lot of podcasts. Some that I haven’t seen mentioned here that are excellent are:
How to Be Amazing: Michael Ian Black interviews people who are really good at what they do. He’s a fantastic interviewer, consistently funny. It’s great.
2 Dope Queens: Stand up comedy, quite funny.
Reply All: Podcast about modern life…they recently turned the table on scammers from India, figured out who they were, called and harassed them until they became friends, and traveled to India to meet them. You should really check out those two episodes.
Edit: also, Do By Friday
This is all too true. Funny podcast.
A couple of other I listen to are Weird Things with Andrew Mayne and Brian Brushwood, and Cordkillers with Tom Merrit and Brian Brushwood. Tom Merrit’s Tech News Today is also better than Leo Laporte’s tech show.
