Bingo.
While it doesn’t go into a lot of detail about what happened with his wife, it is STRONGLY hinted that he had to kill her… but I’ll leave it alone.
Be advised that “I am Legend” is a collection of short stories, some good, some bad. It reminded me a lot of the Alfred Hithcock short stories I read when I was a kid (though if he wrote them, or just edited them, I don’t know).
Okay, I totally retract potboiler as a description of Swan Song. There’s nothing profound about it, but it’s a great ride. Equating it to a good B-movie would be totally accurate. I, apparently incorrectly, was using potboiler as a phrase to describe a page-turning fast read. Sorry, Mr. McCammon - didn’t mean to damn you with faint praise.
A few more PA comics/cartoons and the like:
When The Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs, Comic and Cartoon, (well it’s just plain apocalyptic in a way) one of the saddest cartoons I’ve ever seen.
The Cursed Earth sequence of Judge Dredd (comic character from 2000AD comic in UK)
After London, Or Wild England by Richard Jefferies from 1885, downloadable from Project Gutenberg
There was a French movie in the last two or three years, focusing on a family in a bleak PA world, beset by gangs and hunger. The nature of the disaster which caused the collapse of society was never explained. The daughter got raped, IIRC from a review; I haven’t seen the movie myself but the reviewer liked it. I guess the film was a big hit in France. Anyone know it?
Le Temps Du Loup (aka The Time Of The Wolf)
That’s the one. Have you seen it? Is it any good?
I haven’t seen it, it’s in my local video rental place but I’d read bad reviews of it so didn’t rent it.
I thought I was the only person in the universe that saw that movie.
Well, I suppose it stands to reason that there are postapocalyptic zombie threads…
And if dozens of zombie threads arose all over the forums crowding out the live threads, that would be the zombie thread apocalypse . . .
Hey picunurse, thanks for the recommendation for “where late the sweet bird sings” I enjoyed it immensely and just finished another of her books, a short story actually.
Zombies can be useful!
MODERATOR COMMENT: We’re not too concerned about zombie threads in Cafe Society forum, so long as folks bear in mind: many of the earlier posters made their comments two years ago, and may not remember what they said back then – in fact, may not look at this thread, and may not even be around any more.
Well, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards holds a special place in my heart. I saw it 30+ years ago and really enjoyed it.
However: I saw it again a year or so ago and was less impressed. I’m not sure if that is due to it not aging well, or perhaps it is not as good for an adult as a youth or perhaps my tastes have changed. In any case, I wouldn’t totally recommend against it, but I’m not sure I can recommend it.
I’d also like to point out that for the past two years, I’ve been reading from this list like mad. I may be near the end of my Dystopian Reading Marathon. I hope not. Addictive thing that is, although morbidly depressing in regards to women.
I’m always up for suggestions!
Auntbeast: I’m on a Dystopian Reading Marathon myself! Do we have much crossover? http://epicdystopia.blogspot.com
There is a short story collection called “Wastelands” that is full of “end of the world” stories, some very very good. I highly recommend it.
Freaks Amour by Tom DeHaven – recommended by a Doper in a thread about obscure books. Mutants. It’s small scale post apocalypse, and very affecting.
Oops:smack:
I’m reading World War Z right now. So maybe it was fate that I reanimate this thread.
Mind if I swipe your big list? There is some crossover, but not as much as I thought! Thank you, great link!
