Kubrick duped Scott into his over-the-top performance. Scott had wanted to play it more subdued and realistic. Kubrick got Scott to agree to play it “big” while promising not to use those takes in the movie, then went ahead and used them anyway. Scott was furious and swore never to work with Kubrick again. Eventually Scott came to see his performance in Dr. Strangelove as some of the best work of his career.
