To clarify his nitpick, the Minutemen were the WWII-era group of costumed adventurers who didn’t actually have any powers – the Nite Owl who was an off-duty cop, and the Comedian back when he wore that ugly yellow outfit, and so on – and when Rorschach and Ozymandias and the rest got together for that one meeting in the '60s, when the Comedian (now decked out mostly in black) set stuff on fire, that would-be group was called “The Crimebusters” in the comic, and “The Watchmen” in the movie.

Since someone mentioned “Doom Patrol”, I throw in the oft-repeated idea that X-Men may have started as a DP ripoff. Group of freaks masterminded by man in a wheelchair, I can see it.

The Avengers, as long as (a) Original!Thor is there, and (b) he’s more an emergency backup than a regular. Properly done, Thor is the baddest badass on hte planet and rarely needs any of their help; he also unbalances the team. e should be the guy that both annoys Cap because he can’t be arsed to show up for training sessions, but makes everyone say “Oh, thank God, Goldilocks is here!” when all of Tony’s clever plans have failed and the Skrulls are about to overwhelm the planet.
I’m also fond of the Legion. They’re a great combo of big guns who are basically armies by themsleves (Mon, the Kryptonians, Mon-El, Colossal Boy, Sun Boy, Wildfire) and the folks with powers that seem silly but are very effective with good team-work. Plus I like legs and none of the girls wear pants.

Saturn Girl was the only one who looked really out of place in the swimsuit costume.
Also. we both forgot Phantom Girl.
That Laurel picture is a mite oversexualized for me. Except perhaps for Dreamy, the Legion girls weren’t trying to look hot; their swimsuit costumes were just the style of their time.
(And of course Laurel had no use for clothes in any practical sense.)

This is probably the last incarnation of the team before Claremont went completely overboard on the who-are-we-going-to-emotionally-rape-THIS-issue trope that made me actively cringe on the threshold of my local comics store.

I remember those days, when it seemed like the Avengers were on the verge of death/defeat and Thor would pop out of nowhere, a literal _deus ex machina_, and turn the tide. It got so overdone the other Avengers would bitch at him (“Can you make not quite the LAST minute from now on?”).
Byrne’s run of Fantastic Four is great; he put back all the old elements that made it great in the sixties while still throwing in new curves. If Marvel Studios manages to snag the FF rights back, they need Byrne to at least consult on the script.

The 70’s to early 80’s was my era for comics, so also plenty of stuff around from the 60’s to read as well.
JLA was my fav, closely followed by the LoSH. I was very much DC, also had some marvel but mainly DC.

The Legion has been mentioned a lot here, as I expected it would be. I used to joke that the luckiest guy in all comicdom was Bouncing Boy. He got to hang out with the cool kids, even though he was chubby. He was probably the best pilot in the bunch. And he married Duo Damsel, who could split into two identical girls.
Well, I’ve recently read some of their later adventures and I must amend that remark. It seems that later on Colossal Boy married a Durlan, a member of Chameleon Boy’s species. They can assume any shape they want. Wrap your heads around that one, folks.

The thread’s gotten this far without anyone mentioning Batman and the Outsiders? They were my favorite team of the '80s (at least before Batman quit and Looker joined); the Legion in the '70s, and the JLA in the '60s.
The Metal Men get an honorable mention.
